Neighbourhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

- Stanley SWinter Garden, Florida542 contributionsBetter but still not greatIt has gotten better over the years and is a lot cleaner but the facilities are not up to par with modern terminals. There is little access for the mobility impaired and it is still often confusing finding the tracks. The clerks seem to be more helpful than when I traveled the city for work but that only goes so far. The Moynihan tunnel is brighter and cleaner but that is only a small part of the station and the need for modernization continues.Visited December 2022Written 12 December 2022

They are trying to make it work better and look better, but there are limits with this clunky space. Lots of quick food options. Very busy.Visited May 2023Written 27 June 2023
- EyekaytooLeverkusen, Germany2,997 contributionsGood train station in the middle of the Big AppleThe third party shuttle service usually taking people from hotels over in New Jersey to Times Square kindly made an exception and dropped off my son & I at Penn Station. This was so we could catch the Long Island Rail Road Train over to Jamaica on our way to the JFK airport and our flight home to Europe. We found this very convenient and certainly significantly more economical that taking a cab or Uber over there. Penn Station itself was perfectly functional & easy to navigate. With frequent trains to Jamaica. All good.Visited June 2023Written 14 August 2023

I gotta say my experience at penn station was awful I don’t travel very often especially in the city but the staff were so disrespectful and not helpful at all. I almost missed my train due to lack of help. I had one question “where do I go” nobody gave me a direct answer. Second of all I asked why the train didn’t say it was going to Baltimore the workers response was “it’s not a plane it makes stops”. It gets worse I kindly said “excuse me” to another worker and she responded with “WHAT”. She was at the costumer service desk, that is not how you are supposed to talk to people. Finally I had to go outside to ask a cop where Moynihan hall was. If someone had been respectful and given me a direct answer I would’ve been able to arrive at my train sooner, not 5 minutes before it left. Some people need to learn some manners because this was not ok.

Penn Station is located beneath Madison Square Garden and also has an additional concourse in Moynihan Hall which is just across the road. It is served by trains on the Long Island Rail Road as well as Amtrak services which go further afield.
I arrived at Penn Station travelling on an Amtrak service. The platform I arrived on had a lift as well as stairs. This was handy for me as I had a suitcase as well as my hand luggage so taking the lift was a blessing. From here you can get onto the concourse and take your onward journey into NYC.
There are shops to buy smacks and drinks for you to take on your journey and a couple of places to buy books and gifts as well. There is a decent food court in Moynihan Hall as well.

Subway is the cheap and easiest way of navigating new York.
Once you figure out your lines and which tracks lead where. 2.60 for one stop or twenty.. good value.

Taking the train from New York to Newark for a New Jersey Devils hockey game was an simple task. Penn station is easy to navigate and staff were helpful in identifying best options for traveling and directions. Busy station however, didn’t fell crowded.

A filthy vile dystopian setting filled with homeless (some of which are mentally ill), panhandlers, vagrants, and grifters residing in various nooks and crannies or otherwise simply laying on the ground in full view of law enforcement while tightly compressed packs of tired, sullen, and depressed commuters shuffle by on their way into the bowels of the dangerous subway system. Overall, it is a living hell. Renovations have been on-going for years, so your journey may be punctuated by the ear-spitting sounds of jackhammers and other construction noises. The pungent smell of dust, mold, body odor and urine also add to the overall atmosphere.

Wonderfully built, spacious, airy, roomy and lots of light pouring in.. that's the Penn station hall. The waiting lounge is very large and the hall has several types of restaurants to choose from. Train arrivals and departures are very clearly shown in the large display board and the information counter is always there to help if one needs way around. It's a really nice station and walk around and inside you know how gargantuan it's.

My Amtrak experience here was great! Arrival and departure was painless and customer service around the terminal was very helpful. When you arrive just ask them to direct you to the main station hub that will pop you out right my Madison Square Garden. Lots of security present with a private Amtrak waiting area that is enforced with somebody actually looking to make sure you have a ticket to wait in that area! I never felt unsafe inside the station, and they had a tremendous amount of places to eat as well!

Took the Acela from Union Station in DC to Penn Station in NYC. Super convenient, nice waiting areas for ticketholders, easy to catch a cab right outside of the station too.

There is a cab stand right across the street by Madison Square Garden. An attendant there will put you in a cab. Tipping them is optional. It's a short cab ride. Uber is OK, but if you don't know New York, a pick up spot can be confusing, and a yellow cab is easy from there and won't cost that much more.

Cómo puedo llegar desde el aeropuerto JFK hasta el aeropuerto La Guardia ?
christopherbO9687MP
Acton, MA669 contributions
Besides taxi services, there are dedicated shuttle buses that periodically travel directly from NYC's JFK airport to LaGuardia airport. There would be no need to connect with any service through Manhattan's Penn Station, which is some distance out of the way from a direct trip from JFK -> LaGuardia. You can look up the schedules for airport transfer services online.

Red Cap Service is available at Newark Penn for Amtrak customers. The service is gratis, but you are expected to tip the Red Cap.

What are conditions like at Penn Station, Amtrak area at the moment, i.e. June, 2020? Are the restaurants/sandwich places open? How about cleanliness? Bathrooms? Haven't been there in a few months. Thanks.
