The LES Conservancy, in existence since 1998, showcase's the Lower East Side , the cradle of American Jewish Immigration. We accomplish this by giving customized private and occasional public tours to groups of all sizes. Our tours are unique in that we are the only ones to take our visitors into the synagogues allowing them to be experienced from the inside. The Biaylstoker Synagogue and The Museum at Eldridge Street are featured on our tours.

My husband and I thoroughly enjoyed our walking tour of the Lower East Side with our tour guide Sharon. We started at the historic Bialystocker synagogue, with Sharon explaining both the fascinating architecture of the building as well as the associated history. She detailed the full story of the Lower East Side, going back hundreds of years, which put the... More

We loved the tour. Our tour guide, Paul, was very knowledgeable. He's a natural instructor. The tour was informative, humorous, and stimulating. He really went out of his way to answer our questions and make the session interactive, which was great since we were able to ask a lot of them and turn the whole thing into more of a... More

My sister and I thoroughly enjoyed an evening tour of this gorgeous and historically significant synagogue on the Lower East Side. Our tour guide, Lori, enthusiastically shared the overall history of Jewish immigration to the Lower East Side as well as the history of the synagogue and its wonderful architectural details. We topped off our evening with dinner in nearby... More

We visited, with the guidance of Barry Judelman, who was an extraordinary guide, parts of the Lower East Side that more or less remain intact in this very important neighborhood in which Jews fleeing persecution in Europe first lived when they they arrived to America in the late 1800's and the early 1900's. The tour brought us back to the real... More

Had a wonderful experience on this tour! Marty, the guide, was very animated and kept everyone captivated with many anecdotes about Harlem including stories of famous Jewish people, like Richard Rogers, who grew up there. This is the third walking tour that I have taken with the Lower East Side Jewish Conservancy, and I can't wait to go on my... More

Barry Judelman was an excellent tour guide! He did not only provide a detailed overview of the history of Jewish life on the Lower Eastside but also shared his insight into current Jewish life and changes in the neighborhood. The tour was an engaging mix of exploring specific places, such as the Bialystoker Synagogue and Shtiebel Row, storytelling, and even... More

Staying in Lower East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Lower East Side
Straddling the bridge between New York’s thriving immigrant past and its modern transformation into a beacon of global art and culture, the Lower East Side is one of the most dynamic neighbourhoods in the city. The blocks of tenements that represented the promise and blight of the Lower East Side immigrant experience now command top dollar for new residents. Right next to old-world delis, 24-hour bodegas, and the garment shops of Orchard Street, you’ll find hip clubs, fashionable bistros, and luxury hotels beckoning at all hours of the evening. If you love nightlife and live music, it’s hard to beat the scene here.
