Neighbourhood: Nolita
Despite being just off of busy Houston Street, Nolita maintains a low-key vibe that makes it a pleasant retreat in the heart of lower Manhattan. Short for “North of Little Italy,” Nolita was once considered to be part of Little Italy. Today, the neighbourhood is popular with young fashionistas popping in and out of the chic independent boutiques that line Mulberry, Mott and Elizabeth Streets. In addition to shopping, there are cozy restaurants and sidewalk cafes serving everything from new-school Italian food to the world-famous cronuts. While small in size (Nolita stretches just a few blocks in each direction), it’s a great neighbourhood to spend an afternoon people watching, window-shopping, and grabbing a bite to eat.

Tommy was the best guide… Ever! Learned so much. My uncle was an altar boy here in the 40s and never knew about this history.great tour to kick off other sites and little ItalyVisited January 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 23 January 2024

It has a beautiful altar, stained glass windows and paintings. If you visit, be sure to look near the side entrance at the large statue of Saint Padre Pio sitting and listening to confessions. There is a block on the other side of the “confessional” statue where a person can sit. Unfortunately, it was behind a locked gate, but you can still view it through the gate.Visited March 2024Travelled with familyWritten 21 April 2024
- Louisa BBucharest, Romania119 contributionsThe most beautiful cathedral in the worldBy far the most beautiful cathedral in the world. You cannot find a more perfect mix anywhere in the world. It’s in “the concrete jungle” that we call NYC, yet it kept a classic, gentle, historic feel to it. The stained glass (as an artist) is absolutely stunning. The details inside are incredible. Must see location for sure!Visited July 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 28 June 2024
- carpediem2019New York City, New York104 contributionsExceptionalBeautiful worship space and exceptional music performance. Their organ dates from 1868, a masterpiece of music design and a delight to hear. Preaching is inspiring and the Nolita crowd friendly. Perfectly located in one of Downtown's culinary meccas, you can easily attend service and proceed to your foodie explorations. Keep praying for peace in your life and in our world!Visited December 2023Travelled soloWritten 14 September 2024

We have been inside St Patrick’s Old Cathedral on more than one occasion. It is a beautiful Basilica with a legendary organ.
This visit we were able to do the Candlelight Catacomb tour. It was an interesting tour that took us down through the underground catacombs, through the church. Up into the choir lift and then into the gated cemetery. We heard historic stories of the five points gangs and the church’s involvement. We learned about its shift from cathedral status to the church and the new construction. It was an interesting tour inside a beautiful church.

At first I thought this was the big St Patricks Cathedral on 5th Avenue, but discovered this was the *original* St Patricks in New York! What a fascinating history, as narrated by our guide Kyle. He had a lot of information to share and a couple of "groaner puns," but that makes for a great time. I thoroughly enjoyed this, and getting to see the huge pipe organ "behind the scenes" was phenomenal.

Very entertaining, respectful, enjoyable tour. Dan was absolutely wonderful. He was able to add humor, information, depth & lots of details on the tour. He was interactive with the tour group, able to answer any questions. Definitely recommend this tour. You also get to see the inside of the church & grounds before going into the catacombs. EXCELLENT!

Not exactly sure of what to expect when we visited St Patrick's cathedral and I was blown away. From the outside the building is beautiful and historic but a step inside reveals beauty that is breathtaking. First off it is much larger inside than it appears outside. The soaring ceilings and grand architecture are remarkable. Make time to visit this stunning cathedral even if for just a few minutes

So here’s something a little different. A visit to New York’s original Catholic Cathedral then Church now Basilica, is an absolute must. This landmark building which admittedly in Catholic Cathedral terms is somewhat understated is steeped in history which was eloquently conveyed by our superb guide Dan. While some may consider visiting catacombs a little macabre their history and the history of the beautiful building under which they lay provide a window into what was a tumultuous time in New York’s history.

Say this in a Magazine article as underrated experiences in NYC, so I booked a ticket. It totally is underrated! Located in Soho at the St Patricks Cathedral, its a very well informed tour by Mike for 90min. The receptionists were also very accommodating for ticket times- thankful as trains into the city on a weekend are mayhem. As a new yorker all my life I did not know many facts that involved the creation of the city dealt a lot with this church & its surroundings. And how important were the people involved. You get a tour of the cemetery first & than inside the church. Its a beauty of its own. Than you are walked down to the bottom basement for the catacombs. If youve been to the one in Peru or Rome, this is smaller but just as interesting. Read the vault stones, use your candle to view everything. Its a great experience to learn something new about the city.

The tour of the catacombs was great! Dan is a very friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. In addition to the history of the basilica, I enjoyed the history of religion in the United States as well. He incorporated humor into his tour as well as interacted with the group well. The catacombs and basilica itself are beautiful. Awesome tour!

We lived just outside NYC our whole lives and visit often. This is a hidden gem in New York City! It’s a unique experience if you’re looking for something to do in NYC. Mike was our tour guide and was extremely engaging and entertaining. He was also informative and extremely knowledgeable about the basilica as well as all of New York City. We highly recommend.

This was a fantastic tour! I went on December 28 2020 and it was very safe with social distancing and required everyone to wear masks. The tour guide (Dan) was extremely knowledgeable not only about the church but about the history of NY and handled everyone's questions very good. We were immersed with history and it was not solely about church/religion but about NY, immigration, and politics throughout NY's history. I am in my early 30's and I'm very happy I did this tour and my mother (late 50's) loved it very much. Highly recommended, 5 stars!

I enjoyed the tour but it was quite expensive for a mini-tour of a very New York historically interesting Church. The catacombs are not catacombs as one thinks of such a thing from European catacombs. Our tour guide, Ross, was very well informed, funny and friendly. For a New Yorker interested in the history of NY Catholics (Irish and Italian in particular) such as me, this tour is particularly interesting. It is sort of a mini-lecture on Catholicism in the late 19th and early 20th Century. Also the neighborhood is fabulous and if you take the tour in the morning you have a great beginning for exploring Spring and Prince Street in SOHO. For movie goers this is the Church from The Godfather I (the famous scene of the baptism) and III as well as Scorcese's Mean Streets. Also I believe that the cemetery also is used in the movie, " Once Upon A Time in America."

What’s the temperature there? How should we dress for the tour?
Written 15 March 2019
The temperature in the basement is regulated and was comfortable throughout the tour even though out was below zero outside. I did not have to take off many layers but did remove my outer coat while inside. This is a great tour that covers a lot of different history about NYC.

A few...walk up a stairs to an organ in the church. Very much optional. Then a few small steps into the catacombs but nothing as high as a storey. Maybe 10 steps max.
