About
NOW PLAYING: EVITA NOV 13 – 24 FAME. POWER. ILLUSION. All three collide in Andrew Lloyd Webber and Tim Rice’s Tony Award-winning rock-opera Evita. Director Sammi Cannold’s bold new vision shows how the events of the Argentinian first lady’s humble teenage years haunted and propelled her controversial rise to power by casting a Young Eva who grows into the iconic Evita. NEW YORK CITY CENTER has played a defining role in the cultural life of the city since 1943 when it was founded by Mayor LaGuardia with the mission to make the best in the performing arts accessible to all. The Encores! series has given new life to the musical theater canon, complemented by the Encores! Off-Center series. Dance remains an integral part of City Center’s mission through programs like the Fall for Dance Festival, which offers subsidized tickets for the price of a movie ticket. Through its education and community programs, City Center also brings the performing arts to over 11,000 New Yorkers yearly.

Neighbourhood: Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.

NYC is magical, especially at night (when the weather is cooler and you can’t see the filth as much lol). You can get whatever you want anytime you want here. I used to live here and I love coming back and spending time in Midtown, Chelsea and Flat Iron. I like to take in a show or two, this time it was The Music Man with Hugh Jackman (he was amazing!) and Pam Anderson did really well in Chicago. I will probably eventually move back, but I needed a break after COVID. Stayed in Hells Kitchen, which is super central but quiet enough to actually rest between activities. There is no other place like New York.

I was very surprised to see the amount of garbage on the streets and sidewalks of this magnificent city. It really does take the shine of the experience you would expect. Almost everywhere you walked there was garbage. Perhaps employing those without jobs to pick up the litter would make the city a better place.

Love this very original style building which houses a number of mini venues. As seen from the photos it has a wide selection of shows.

We saw the Encores presentation of "Mack and Mabel" at City Center and had a wonderful time....unfortunately the only complaint I have is the amount of stairs to get to the balcony and one small elevator..

We travelled to the great NYC February this year . It was amazing. The city is so vast and so fast. We done all the uptown downtown and midtown tours. Harlan was my fave. We went to a bar called the red rooster. App the rat pack used to drink in there , downstairs in Ginny’s super club . But my sisters was China town. I found the New Yorkers really friendly people. Dd o much to do and see. 5 days and nights was no where near enough time. Although we were back in the hotel by 9.40pm after leaving at 8 am. So much walking and site seeing. I’m still in awe of the place after bring home 3 weeks. One thing tho. When wanting to see the Statue of Liberty , make ssure you go on the official ferry boat. Even if the que is 3 hours long. (So they say ). We were approached and told we could join a fast track for $40 each. The ferry is free. !! Obviously it was a scam. We were taken by coach over to New Jersey to catch a “ fisherman’s boat “. There were over 500 people in the same “boat “ as ourselves. We qued from 12 midday and got back at 630pm. Please be aware of these scams. It wasn’t the money but the lost hours that we will never get back. We were leaving NYC the next day. Other than that I loved every second and can’t wait to go back. Grand central station is a must .. have a glass of champagne in the little bar top of the steps. Drinks are expensive but food reasonable. We went to see the tins turner musical on Broadway. Fantastic! Times Square is breathtaking. Just lights and billboards but has an atmosphere of its own. Photos don’t do it justice.

City Center is one of the things I love about NYC!

Home to world renowned dance companies such as Alvin Ailey American Dance Theater and the Dance Theater of Harlem, City Center is located on 55th street,
on the edge of the theater district.

I had not seen the AADT in a very long time. In seeing them this time, it made me misty. I thought to myself these dancers weren't even born when I first experienced the joy of dance in the early 70's. Over the decades the company has evolved and is more culturally diverse than ever.

One piece performed was Lazarus(2018) a new movement that embodied the soul and energy of classic Ailey. "Lazarus" from a bible story had lots of texture and variety
throughout the movement. I love the fact that "hip hop" and "house" moves have been
incorporated into the piece. Very soulful it clearly depicted a supernatural and spiritual
experience.

Revelation (1960) an Ailey classic, first seen many years ago as a teenager. All of the excitement and energy was still there and it made my heart happy seeing it again. I really wanted to shake a tail-feather because it was all so moving and invigorating.

City Center is a fabulous venue for dance companies and theater. The second grand tier right made for a superb seat. The foyer has many photographs of luminaries who have worked in the theater and dance and have been instrumental in making City Center a cultural attraction of NYC.

If a performance is at City Center and you really want to see it, it would be worth it to
just see it!

Next up Dance Theater of Harlem, April 2010.

Made a day trip to the Big Apple last Sunday to see a matinee performance of Alvin Ailey at City Center. I have been a BIG fan of theirs for years and have tried to get to see them every year when they perform there, though there have been occasional misses. What a treat to return this year, It was the best performance of Ailey that I have ever seen. City Center is a great venue though of course it makes sense to go there when there is a performance that calls to you. It doesn't hurt to splurge if you can for really good seats--for me doing so makes the experience that much more enjoyable. For EVERY lover of live dance, if you have not yet had the good fortune of seeing Ailey live, I can't recommend more highly that you get to City Center to see them.

Had seats in the front row of the Gran Tier outstanding view however the theater is a smaller one and I believe every seat regardless of cost provides a very good review of the theater. I would probably stay away from the first few rows in the orchestra because it just to close to the stage and actually makes it easy to miss some of the movement. If you need more leg room however the first room of the orchestra might be useful. Or perhaps even better an aisle seat so if you are 6'3" like I am or taller you can more your feet into the aisle. Just be careful no one trips over your feet.

Attended a performance of Evita at this theater which was my first visit and what a pleasant experience. The theater is about 75 years old and is impeccably maintained. The interior is beautiful and the design very impressive, be sure to see the ceiling. Lighting, sound and acoustics are great, and the space between the rows of seats provides plenty of leg room.
The presentation of Evita was wonderful and demonstrated the care and creativity that City Center fosters.
All of the staff were cordial and welcoming, and quite efficient.
