Neighbourhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighbourhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighbourhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

Greenwich village is already knows for it's focus on culture and bohemian styles. West Village is a subsection that is even more intense than the whole. Artist lofts and galleries, Cafe Society (referring to the first integrated nightclub that still influences the area), Off-Broadway's oldest theater and the world's biggest Halloween parade. The West Village is both old and new simultaneously and a wonderful place to get lost while strolling around and seeing the sights

We need to visit The West Village every fall. We crave it. We head to the West Village and simply walk the streets with no plans. If we are hungry, then it is easy to get deliciousness food at a good price without some ungodly wait. We love Bleecker. The people and the neighborhood locals are wonderful. So genuine and caring and friendly. Washington Square Park is special. So is McDougal Street. Bedford, Grove, Barrow, Charles, Perry, too many quaint streets to list. Heartwarming.

This is a great neighborhood to walk around. We had dinner here several times, lots of good places and it is quite animated at night. But it is not as it used to be, too much money, too many temporary residents, so it is not the village it used to be. Still a lot of fun.

The West village is my favorite side of the village. I'm a big fan of the architecture. When you walk down any side street, you will not see two alike structures on the same street. The townhouses are beautiful. These stately homes are all well over 100 years old.
You do not see the same grandeur or charm in the east village.

The West Village is the place to be. I walked through the heart of the neighborhood. Many older buildings and brownstones. It has a very European feel, especially with the restaurants and cafes. This is one of the more exclusive neighborhoods of Manhattan. I never made it there but the building from the tv show Friends is not too far

Greenwich Village is a very cool area of Manhattan and the West Village is the western part of this neighbourhood.
There are plenty of apartment blocks in the area also lots of small bars and restaurants. There are also plenty of little shops selling all sorted of things.
I was really struck by the architecture. To me it seemed like this was the New York from movies and TV shows of the 70' and 80's and it was nice to wander around.

We came to this important and charming neighborhood several times during our stay, mostly for food and drink. But one could also come here for a walking tour or just wandering tree-shaded brownstone streets. Lots of eating nightlife here, a couple of clubs. Famous and historic.

THE WEST VILLAGE is like my Home in NYC. I appreciate every step that I did there! Manorial houses and Pent Houses, nice people carring beauty dogs in a slowly atmosphere, so much different of the Times Square...Nothing in the World is better to Me than walk by Broadway in the 70 or 60 St!...

We had dinner here, and it is a great neighborhood for restaurant searches. All sorts of cuisines, formal and informal,, lots of outdoor seating. There is also a lot of charm here, narrow tree-lined streets with attractive row houses and apartment buildings. Well-served by the subway system. Stroll around, especially on a warm evening.

The West Village is the western half of Manhattan's epicenter of cultural. It's home to celebrities such as Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick.

Does anyone have a clear route of how to get to Christopher St. Station from Newark airport? I would like to avoid paying for a taxi and will arrive on a weekday at around 10 AM.

I'm headed to NYC this weekend with my BF, and will be left to my own devices for most of Friday while he interviews. We're staying in West Village (The Dream Hotel). What should I go do/see on my own? He hates shopping so I'd like to get a bit of that in while I'm alone (5th ave I'm assuming?), but other then that I'd love some suggestions.
I'm a nearly 30 female and have a really wide range of interests - outdoorsy, but a foodie that's still really into arts/culture etc. I'm a fairly well traveled person and am generally city-savvy; no problems with cabs/buses/walking. Restaurant recommendations would also be great!
Thanks!

I lived in the West Village for a year and it was my favorite neighborhood in all of the city. Everything is walkable, so pack comfortable shoes and just walk around!
I'll jump in on the suggestions for Chelsea Market and the highline.
At Chelsea Market be sure to hit up Eleni's for a raspberry cupcake and/or Fat Witch for the best damn brownie you'll ever eat.
Walk through Greenwhich Village and you'll find amazing shops, cafes, and restaurants. If you like NYC style pizza, John's on Bleeker is legit (although they only sell by the pie, not the slice).
In the West Village, favorite spots are Prodigy Coffee, Swine on Hudson (serves food super late), Vin Sur Vingt Wine Bar on 11th, Westville (10th and Hudson). My husband and I lived on Hudson and Leroy and walked down to Westville at least a few times a week for dinner. The food is superb and fast service. Great for before a night out.
I can't say enough great things about the West Village, truly. It's such a unique place in that you often don't even feel like you're in a big, bustling city--especially in the mornings. I loved walking over to prodigy in the morning for an Americano, when the shopkeepers were washing off sidewalks and setting up chairs.
Where you go to shop will depend on what type of shopping you like. Soho/Chelsea/West Village all have boutiques. You'll want to go uptown for more high end stuff--midtown on up. 5th Ave is very high end and not a good representation of true NYC in my opinion, but it's a nice place to walk if you want to head up to the park afterwards.
Have so much fun and soak up this incredible neighborhood!
