The area
Address
Neighbourhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighbourhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighbourhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.

A magical night of superb music
An iconic Jazz location which genuinely exceeded all expectations. I went with my daughter, and whilst neither of us are jazz aficionados the quality of music, the atmosphere and everything about our evening was magical. I love New York (this was my 6th visit), but will now ensure that every return I go back to this magical place.

The World’s most iconic jazz venue.
This is an iconic place to hear the highest world class jazz musicians in an intimate setting. It’s pretty much exactly the same as it was when Coltrane, Miles, Monk, etc played here. It frequently sells out, especially Friday and Saturday night but you should always book ahead. The seating is general admission, so if you want to sit close ( literally right next to the band stand) get there early- it’s not unusual to see people lined up outside at 6 pm for an 8 pm set. The reward is hearing incredible music as if you’re in someone’s living room and not a concert hall. Although it’s a basement club ( down a flight of stairs) it’s more like a “temple” of jazz. The audience ( often full of other musicians along with people from all over the world) listens intently; talking is not tolerated and you’ll likely be stared at or admonished if you’re not there to really listen. Some of jazz’s greatest live performances and recordings originated here. A must visit place if you’re visiting NYC. It’s one of the quintessentially NY things that makes the city what it is.

    Iconic NYC jazz venue
We were lucky enough to see the David Murray Quartet at the Vanguard. A fantastic evening of high quality jazz at one of New York's best clubs. The club is small & intimate but not overly crowded (despite being full the night we went). Service is great and drinks reasonably priced. Our evening at the Vanguard was everything we hoped it would be.

We couldn't appreciate the music as we had a table close to the bar and the bartenders never stopped preparing drinks, making ice with a noisy machine and moving between the tables. Worse concert experience ever.

Saw Vanguard Jazz Orchestra on its regular Monday night slot. If you have any liking for modern jazz it's a must. Super playing by 16 very talented musicians

The Village Vanguard or just "The Vanguard" is truly a classic NYC jazz venue that has provided listeners with wonderful jazz for decades. This place is usually packed--buy tickets on line beforehand, but you might chance the "no ticket, try to squeeze in line" that often forms. This place has one downside in my opinion--no food. The bar is good and the service team make things happen, so that works. In summary, this place is all about the music and the vibe. Many visitors from out of NYC coming from Europe, Asia, Latin America, elsewhere and other states. Some listeners are aficionados and others are just checking things out and punching their jazz ticket to say that they have been here. The talent is usually first rate and often legendary. I saw Cecile McLorin Salvant, a highly lauded if not universally known talent who has many friends in the jazz world. In my opinion, she is a unique and fabulous singer. So this venue is highly recommended for listeners.

True jazz lovers can’t visit NYC without the Village Vanguard experience. Intimate would be one way to describe the space, but if you’re claustrophobic, you’ll probably want to skip the experience. We purchased tickets in advance and arrived shortly after the doors opened. The doorman let us right in and we were seated close to the stage. In reality, the room is small so you’re never far from the stage no matter where you’re seated and the acoustics are great. Each guest has to buy one drink, but there are lots of options both alcoholic and non-alcoholic. All in all, it was a great night with great music.

An intimate, top notch jazz experience in a historic club. Very welcoming staff -seated our party before everyone arrived - unlike many places. Beautiful experience.
