Gustav Klimt paintings of Adele Bloch-Bauer are fabulous! So are the other paintings of this amazing Austrian artist from the start of the 20th Century... The Neue Galerie is an ideal place to see these masterpieces: small, elegant place, very cozy and welcoming. It is specialized in Austrian and German Art and, besides Klimt, offers magnificent works of a variety... More

If you needed another reason to visit the Upper East Side, this is it. A charming little gallery now housing 5 or 6 Klimt masterpieces. Including the showpiece, Woman in Gold. A great way to spend 45 - 60 minutes. Then enjoy the area. Central Park or Madison Avenue shopping.

A Klimt exhibition was showing this month, including the gallery's centerpiece, Woman in Gold. Absolutely beautiful paintings, plus exquisite sculptures and other fine arts. Estee Lauder's collection contains some outstanding works that were new to me. Certainly worth a 90 minute visit, but arrive early to obtain tickets, which are available only on day of entry.

Went to see The Woman in Gold and it brought tears to my eyes. BEAUTIFUL!!! Just the history behind the Klimt paintings is reason enough for a visit. Expect long lines to get in. We went back about an hour before closing and got right in.

I loved the movie and absolutely loved the painting. I can see why the Austrian people didn't want to give it up but was so glad that it survived the Nazi's. This gallery had several of Klimpt's paintings and sketches that he did , they were all great but my favorite was the one of Adele Bloch-Bauer done in the... More

We went there at 10am to have a coffee before museum open with wife, daughter and three grandsons, and at the coffeplace we were not atended as they said small children are not consumists! and as they did not wait on... The Neue Gallerie is a gem. It is a small museum focused on early 20th century Austrian and German Art and Design. The highlights of the collection are Klimt's portraits.

If you're a Klimt fan, and even if you're not, then this is the place for you. It focuses on German and Austrian art. Main floor has Klimt's most famous painting, next to his "Kiss," of Adel Bauer. So famous they even made a movie about its history and ultimate disposition. However I won't give the ending away-no spoiler alert.... More

First thing in the morning (11am opening), there’s a long line to get in. This small museum in an upper east side townhouse celebrates mostly early 20th century German and Austrian art. Gustav Klimt and his Woman is Gold is superb and worth the price of admission. There are other notable artists (Kandinsky) shown in a relatively intimate setting. Also,... More

Staying in Upper East Side

Neighbourhood Profile
Upper East Side
Combining quiet residential neighbourhoods that have easy access to Central Park with world-famous cultural institutions, the Upper East Side is one of the most livable places in the city. Along beautiful Fifth Avenue, you’ll find Museum Mile, which houses many of the nation's most famous attractions in a single stretch, like The Metropolitan Museum of Art and the Guggenheim Museum. Walk a few blocks into the neighbourhood, and you’ll come to Park Avenue, the poshest address in the city, lined with grand apartment buildings as far as the eye can see. Even if you can’t afford the luxury goods along Madison Avenue, it’s still a great spot to window shop an afternoon away.
