About
From its inception, Macy's Herald Square was a store unlike any other. Over the past 150 years, it has become a true New York City icon. Built in 1902, Macy's Herald Square was the first building to have the modern-day escalator, and it has continued to be a trendsetter. Today, "America's Largest Department Store" covers an entire city block with 11 levels of the latest fashions for you and your home. Macy's offers a full-service Visitor Center on the Mezzanine Level, plus restaurants throughout the store and exciting events almost every day.

- LeonhknyHong Kong, China14,203 contributionsThe department storeMacy's is the representative of department store worldwide. An icon of capitalism and consumerism, the Herald Square flagship has special meaning for both New Yorkers and tourists. Goods are not particularly expensive as anticipated by many. Apart from the vintage escalator, America's largest department store is also famous for ornate Christmas decoration. Do take a look when around.Visited December 2022Written 11 December 2022
- holidayhoney65Chessington, United Kingdom1,192 contributionsMacys at ChristmasWe visited Macys to see the famous Christmas decorations and we were blown away. Macys go all out from the building itself, to the windows and the decorations in the store. So much planning and thought has gone into them and they certainly draw a crowd. Well worth a visit if in NY at Christmas time. And of course we did a bit of shopping while we were there, well it would have been rude not to!Visited December 2022Written 2 January 2023

Ralph Lauren clothes were good price as were toys You need to come with lot of time as it’s very big store and you must visit all the floors . - karenCFCLondon, United Kingdom313 contributionsNOTHING SPECIALCame in to have a look around with the intention of hopefully buying something. A bit of a shambles but I suppose as just after Christmas. More like a jumble sale now. Shop is way too hot and made me want to just get out asap.Visited January 2023Written 11 January 2023
- Brucethealien20 contributionsBecame our go to place for shoppingWe visited Macys just on a whim as we were passing and it’s famous, we actually ended up picking up a few items we needed and others as gifts for family. I loved the traditional wooden escalators. The cashier/salesman was super friendly and when he heard out English accents he started asking about Halloween in the UK (it was a few days away) and how do we celebrate etc he was explaining about the Macy’s Halloween and New Years parades and how different department stores in the uk are to the US. It actually became our go to place on our trip my Wife actually went there every day of our stay in New York. Prices were a little more than you would pay elsewhere but that’s to be expected although we did find several bargains and reduced items. Would definitely recommendVisited October 2022Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 January 2023
- Curtis FEaston, Maryland36 contributionsIt's a giant department store. Was walking around midtown Manhattan exploring, so decided to check out the largest Macy's in the world. Didn't do any shopping, just walked around taking in the sights. It's a massive store, something like 6 or 7 stories tall and I believe takes up an entire city block.Visited February 2023Written 6 February 2023

Such great deals and so much fun indoors . Helpful staff. We were there around Black Friday, so trillions and of people and not enough changing rooms. Definitely would stay near here next time!!!!Visited November 2022Travelled with familyWritten 6 March 2023

I was so excited to visit Macy’s for the first time in New York. While waiting in line to pay for some items, I reached into my coat pocket to grab my phone. My back was to the other people in line and a Macy’s worker who was walking towards me. The worker had walked into my elbow as I had just reached my phone. As I had apologised as I did not see him walk around the corner, he came up to my face and demanded an apology and I said that I did not see you coming and was reaching for my phone. The Macy’s worker then proceeded to call me a colourful word that starts with C and ends in T. I immediately left and no other worker at the till had asked was I okay as it made me very upset.

They’ve done a superb job with their Christmas window displays. However, inside was a real disappointment. We found most floors to be messy and staff were unhelpful. The Christmas section was also a real letdown and not what I was expecting. Save yourself the trip and go to Saks.

Been here several times over the years and it never disappoints. The Christmas window and internal decorations are stunning. We particularly like how they have embraced the age of the building, keeping the old wooden escalators. We were lucky in hitting black Friday delas and grabbed a bargain. Store workers are really helpful and friendly.

Never been to the Macy's during the holiday season now that I think about it.
It's nicely decorated on the outside for the holidays.
Found a warm and big gray and sequined scarf for other cold days while here in NYC.
Some really vintage wood and narrow escalators on the 4th floor to the 9th floor.
The scarves are on the lower level with the accessories.

From the UK to NYC... an excellent shopping experience.
I would quite happily describe it as retail nirvana. This iconic store in the heart of New York City offers an excellent shopping experience. The moment you step inside, you're greeted by an impressive array of fashion, beauty, and home goods.
The selection is immense, the staff are friendly and knowledgeable; ready to assist you in any way they can. Plus, the historic significance of this Macy's location adds to the overall charm.
Whether you're a fashion enthusiast, a bargain hunter, or a tourist seeking a quintessential New York experience, Macy's at Herald Square won't disappoint. It's a must-visit destination for shoppers and a piece of New York's vibrant history.

What a shop!
If I knew that there was going to be so much stuff in this shop I would of brought more holiday spends!
It was raining so we thought we would visit the famous Macy’s! The shop is so big that it doesn’t feel busy! Clothes weren’t too expensive and there was some great deals on!
I wanna come back!

I love Macy’s as a store and generally staff are pleasant and polite. But today I was rudely spoken to by an assistant when I attempted to check out a rail nearby her. She didn’t even bother to look up from her phone either! Maybe a customer service course is called for🤷🏻♀️

Iconic for sure... but it's just a department store like most others. Cool to see from the outside, not too much excitement on the inside.

Why is Macy's customer service so BAD? Why is it that when you call Macy's customer service, they cannot help you with complaints? Why when you place an order from Macy's for same-day pickup, one is unable to get the item and told by customer service on the phone that they do not have the item? When you go to the store, the item is there on the rack. How come their customer service is horrible? No one wants to help the customer, you are just told to complain online and no one gets back to you. What has happened to Macy's? They have become a trashy store instead of the elite store that they once were.

Is it still possible for a tourist to redeem tax paid in Macy’s NYC? I recall (possibly incorrectly) that there was an arrangement in the past

steve d is right; unfortunately it isn’t the case anymore. I went to the visitor information, as I had done in the past, last week and they said this doesn’t apply anymore.
Still a worthwhile store to visit!

Which is the best way to get to the original wooden escalators? I will only have a little time to visit Macy's, but want to ride the wooden escalators first. Is there anything else that I HAVE to see? I will be there May 20th.
Thank you for any information.

Basically just get on the escalator and keep riding them to the top, as they change from new to old as you near the top floors.. U do get a lovely coffee in Starbucks in the store and it’s perfect to watch the world go by 😊

How long is the wait for Santaland village on weekends? This will be a first time for us. We made reservations for Saturday afternoon but now are worried the wait could be more than my kid can handle... Thanks so much!!

Depends on when you go. Early morning (8:30-9:00) time slot took just under an hour on Sunday, Dec 15. I would expect afternoon and evening waits to be MUCH longer.
Does the store offer parking on site or near? Or do you recommend one near?
Unfortunately we do not offer parking at Macy's. We do have a few garage options in the neighborhood. The one I suggest would be the Icon Parking garage located at One Pennsylvania Plaza.

Hi, I have been trying to book Santa land for my two children for the 24th of December as that is the day we arrive in NY, but the website is only bringing reservations up for November, will I have to wait til December to book a Christmas Eve slot? I'm worried the slots will be gone by then.
Santaland reservations can be made up to 5 days in advance so you should be able to book any available slots when 12/19 or 12/20 rolls around. I hope you're able to get a reservation and have a wonderful time with your family!
