From its inception, Macy's Herald Square was a store unlike any other. Over the past 150 years, it has become a true New York City icon. Built in 1902, Macy's Herald Square was the first building to have the modern-day escalator, and it has continued to be a trendsetter. Today, "America's Largest Department Store" covers an entire city block with 11 levels of the latest fashions for you and your home. Macy's offers a full-service Visitor Center on the Mezzanine Level, plus restaurants throughout the store and exciting events almost every day.

Macy's on 34th used to be one of the best places in NYC. Now, it is a million dollar dump. The bathrooms are disgusting. The recently renovated shoe section is a complete mess, and tourists can be found sitting, sleeping, and eating among shoes that are strewn about and in piles. I was horrified when I went in to browse... More

This place is HUGE! I wandered around for a few minutes and couldn't decide where to look next. Absolutely beautifully decorated and organized. I had just left training and had my backpack, it appeared I was making the security staff nervous so I left (very understandable) I went back later and was not disappointed.

It was pretty cool to say that I was in the largest store in the world. I enjoyed walking around and taking in the enormity of it, but it is far too big to actually shop in. I wouldn't even know where to begin

I was excited to go, lots in the store, miles if nice things to look at. Disappointed by the men's restroom, not that I visited it but my husband commented on the dirt state it was in. Secondly my husband wanted to buy me a Michael Kors handbag to go with the purse he bought me. Stood at the counter... More

Having been somewhat underwhelmed when we visited Bloomingdale's we had a very pleasant surprise on coming here. Staff were really friendly and helpful, particularly in the Kiehl's department and shoe department. Lots of designer names, but they also sold things that "normal" people can afford to buy. Store was very well laid out despite being huge. Our favourite part of... More

You must visit Herald Square and the Macy's store. 10 Stories and 1 full block. Worth the visit just for the experience. Check out the antique wood escalator!

The sign outside says this is the largest department store in the world. So be prepared to do some walking when you enter the doors. It's like a Macy's inside, only bigger and grander, and with much more selection than you'll find in your hometown Macy's. Definitely worth a visit if you're in the area. Make sure you check out... Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
