This museum isn’t the biggest or the fanciest. It’s not on the top of the NYC tourist list. But as someone who has spent a lot of time in NYC, I really appreciate this museum, which focuses on the history of the city. The museum is clean and spacious. The ground floor has a neat 20-ish minute film on NYC and its evolution. There are tons of artfully composed and arranged photography exhibitions showing the daily lives of New Yorkers. There was a colorful, fun basketball exhibit when I went, showing the history of the sport and how it relates to city life. There was a temporary dollhouse exhibit, which didn’t interest me much, but they have many rotating exhibits, and this one will be quickly replaced, so there is something for everyone. There are two large exhibits showing the history/evolution of NYC, from its inception to the 2000s. I loved the modern part of the exhibit, as it showed how the city has weathered racism, the depression, and urban decay. I loved the very large, but not overwhelming, exhibit on activism—everything from battling anti-immigrant/nationalism sentiments, abolition, prohibition, women’s rights, environmental causes, and all the way up until the Black Lives Matter movement. There is also an ongoing exhibition focusing on the COVID 19 pandemic. People from outside NYC would find this very moving. Overall, if you want to get away from the touristy stuff and the crowds, and learn something about NYC, give this a try.…

This museum is housed in a beautiful building on 5th Avenue, very close to the Conservatory Garden in Central Park (which is also worth a visit). The museum is very informative and absolutely worth a visit. I suggest to watch the video on the first floor before seeing the exhibits as it gives a very good overview. We spent most of our time on the floor which shows the history of New York and visited the 'Urban Indian' exhibit, which was absolutely worth seeing. On a quick visit to NY with my parents, we stopped by the Museum of the City of New York. We parked across the street since it was a Saturday. It was easy to get into. The exhibits were good, the staff were wonderful. We purchased a few items at the gift store. The staff also told us how to get to the Statue of Liberty.…

Located on 5th Ave at the corner of E 104th Street There are a couple of gift shops on the arrival level. There is a nice casual cafe on Level 2 I think (arrival is level 1?) - a chance to sit down, grab a drink and a snack, then head off into the museum. My strong advice is, go down to the Ground floor first (the one below arrival level) - beautifully clean rest rooms, and a theatre which runs a 30 minute movie every, oh maybe 45 minutes - check the times when you arrive. Just head in the door a few minutes early and grab a seat. The rear seat means you can lean on the wall as a backrest - the seating is bench style. The movie runs for 30 minutes - AND IT IS SUPERB!! The best concise coverage of the history of NYC I have seen. It is worth going to this museum JUST to see the movie. When finished there, head up to either 1 (arrival) or 2, I can't remember which - and have a browse and a read of the permanent static displays of NYC history. Lots of photos and artifacts. Take your time. They also have other varying displays which change through the year. Make sure you check their site to avoid any school group visits and such.
