Irwin Chanin was born to a constructor father and a housewife mother, both natives of Poltava, Ukraina. Raised in poverty and deprivation, he had the drive to achieve and to make it to the top. And he did: he built this high rise in the heart of Manhattan as a high-steel construction, employing thousands of workers and overseeing a project that requires exquisite timing: it was a highly congested area and contractors were forbidden from storing anything on the sidewalks: all steel, concrete, wood, fixtures, needed to be installed immediately upon delivery. The building was completed about a year before the Depression hit and immediately rented out, with demand exceeding supply. While restrained on the outside, the inside of the building is profoundly ornate. It's one of the outstanding examples of Art Deco in Manhattan. The lobby depicts the story of New York as heaven for venturous immigrants. The bronze panels symbolize Courage, Effort, Determination and Vision. To learn more about it, I cannot recommend highly enough Donald L. Miller's “Supreme City”. Sadly, photography is not allowed in the lobby, unlike the gorgeous Fred French Building (separate review).
