About
Avoid the traffic of the Verrazzano-Narrows Bridge by taking the free ferry to Staten Island, where you can marvel at the beauty of New York’s coastline along the way. The iconic orange ferry sails right through New York Harbor and is one of the best ways to see the Statue of Liberty and Manhattan skyline. Snap photos, watch life pass by, and even look out for the Brooklyn Bridge in the distance. Upon arrival in Staten Island, be sure to visit the National Lighthouse Museum and the Empire Outlets mall, located right next to the terminal. – Tripadvisor

    Excellent Experience!
When you’re in New York, you’ll more than likely want to see The Statue of Liberty. There are a few different options for you, none of which are free. BUT! Staten Island Ferry IS! And offers breathtaking views of this beautiful lady! The ferry passes right across the front of her on the way over to Staten Island, and sane back but not quite as close. It’s so easy to get to. A $3.00 trip on the subway from Times Square gets you to Whitehall Terminal. This in itself is great, shops, places to eat, toilets etc! There are 4 huge doors to the ferries. They leave about every 20 mins or so. Peak times are before 10 am and after 4.30 pm, avoid these times if you can. It looks like it will be crowded but it’s deceiving, the actual ferries are ginormous and very spacious, try and go to the upper deck and to the right hand side, by far the best view! The views of Lower Manhattan are also absolutely fantastic. Once you dock you HAVE to get off the ferry, walk around the terminal and get on another ferry to come back. Unless you want to wander around a bit! I would say it’s a highlight of a trip to this incredible City! A must do.

Excellent service for locals and tourists
This is definitely one thing to do, whether you are travelling from NY to Staten Island or just want to get a great view of the Statue of Liberty. We stayed on Staten Island and used the Ferry twice a day. It runs every 30 minutes and is smooth, with great views. We got the parking app for Staten Island parking, right beside the terminal. The ferry only takes 25 minutes and is on time. A great experience. The staff are very helpful.

One of the best free things to do in NYC, great views and a fun experience
I've been lucky enough to visit NYC several times and always enjoyed seeing the iconic ferries plying their trade from Manhatten to the State Island, but this was the first time I'd ever ridden them. We wanted to see the Statue of Liberty but not pay $100 for the privilege and also, lacking the time to take a tour. The fact that the SIF is free also appeals to my socialist leanings and as it was a pretty day, the promised views of the iconic statue and the Manhatten skyline didn;t disappoint. Most of the passengers on our ferry did the same thing as we did, namely, disembarked at Staten Island and zipped straight back around to catch the return. Since the ferries leave every 30 mins, on the hour and the half-hour, and the trip takes about 25 mins, this can be done with minimal delay. Maybe in bad weather, with a slower crossing, it would necessitate some waiting. Note that you can't simply stay on the vessel you crossed on - all must go ashore at the end of the crossing. There are, I think, 19 vessels in the fleet and on our outward journey, we had one with open decks but not all of them do and the return was on a similarly large boat, but one with windows and not open decks so the views were clouded and blurred by very dirty windows. If both trips had been on such a vessel I would have felt somewhat cheated to be honest. I guess it is luck of the draw. Still, super-worthwhile doing especially if the weather is clear

    Great fun and free
The ferry runs regularly back and forth to Staten Island and is free to everyone. You are able to get photos of the Statue of Liberty and a bonus was the discounted retail outlet on the other side. We had a quick shop at Nike and then returned back to Manhattan. We really loved the boat ride.

Unbeatable value for money if you want to see the Statue of Liberty
Easy to reach and doesn’t cost a thing. Ferry takes some 25 minutes and goes quite close to the Liberty Island. Depending on the ferry there are number of open-air areas on the both ends of the ferry for a photo-moment.

    Staten Island Ferry
The Staten Island Ferry was a great FREE way to see the Statue of Liberty and the Manhattan skyline. It was easy to figure out how to get on and off. And was a nice way to sit and relax after lots of walking around the city!

Excellent views, well organised and space for all.
Excellent service and value - it’s free! One of the highlights of our 6 night stay in New York. It’s a huge ferry with plenty of space for everyone. If doing a round trip, get off handy and walk quick to catch the ferry back as one leaves shortly after the ferry arrives.

    Great free ride
This is the way to go if you don't have time to go all the way to the Statue of Liberty through the National Park Service. It's free and easy to use - just stand outside on the right side of the ferry. There are also fast food and souvenir options in both terminals. Staten Island has a nice 9/11 memorial as well, so you can walk down by the water and see it before catching another ferry back to Manhattan.

Simple and free way to see Statue of Liberty
With everything else to visit in NYC we wanted to see Statue of Liberty but did not want to actually visit it. We caught the free Statten island ferry - loads of people but the ferry is massive. Try to get on right hand side going (left coming back). Also try to get on the front coming back for amazing views of Manhattan skyline. Just get off and walk round for the return trip

Our New York friend (who joined us) said that the Staten Island Ferry is a must-do as it’s free and has very good views of the Statue of Liberty and of the New York City skyline. She was spot on. It’s a wonder the ferry wasn’t leaning to one side as most of the people were crowding the rails and windows as we passed the Statue of Liberty. Not quite as close as one of the paid tours out past the grand old lady, but pretty good nonetheless.

Great way to view the Statue of Liberty.
And it’s for free.
Lots of seats inside. And decks outside to see the statue and make better photos.

What a lovely, relaxing experience.
When you board, go to YOUR right. That's the side that goes closest to the Statue of Liberty. However, we were able to move freely from side to side and from upper to lower deck.
Restrooms are on the ferry- use them! It's difficult to find public restrooms in the city.
We rode straight the Staten Island, got off, and immediately got back on to go to Manhattan.
Nice and warm inside, but ability to go outside, too.
I recommend this FREE ride to everyone!

We are from London
We had dinner locally at Fraunces Tavern and then walked across and took the ferry trip (free!) and boarded for the 8.30pm ferry, disembarked (you cannot stay on board) and then took the 9pm ferry back to manhattan.
Not that busy.
Very windy- but we were outside in the deck most of the time.
Great views of the city at nighttime.
My top tip would be- this is a staple of transport for locals and of course the priority for them is to get off the ferry and get to work, home or whatever. I would advise waiting til the very end of the trip and then going downstairs to disembark once the doors have opened.
Would definitely recommend it. Especially as it’s free - but avoid the busy peak times and be respectful that this isn’t a touristy thing for many people who are just going about their daily business and also for homeless people where they are able to -for free- be warm for 30 minutes (the ferry inside is lovely and warm but outside in the elements is cold- depending on the time of year!)

A great and cheap way to see Statue of Liberty. Efficient service. I do think that the company should do more to keep the tourist boat scammers out off the building and off the Island ferry property. They will tell you that since covid the ferry does not pass by the Statue of Liberty, that when the ferry gets to statton island there is a 1 hr turn around. And they want you on there boats. The scammers boats leave from the mid town area. Statton island ferry is free, it does fo right past the Statue of liberty and unless you want to get off at the Statue use the Statton island ferry.

This is the easiest experience in NYC. Head straight to the Staten Island ferry sign and walk straight in, you will likely see where people are queueing for the ferry which is every 15 mins - there are also tannoys telling you the gate number. No tickets or admission required just straight onto the ferry, less than 30 min ride and then straight off and get on the return ferry if you just wish to see the Statue of Liberty and the NYC skyline.
Top tip - stand at the back of the boat for the best views on the way to Staten Island

Take the free ferry to see the Statue of Liberty up close. Stay on the right side of the boat on the way to Staten Island and the left coming back to Manhattan for amazing skyline views.

Visiting family in NYC and we took the ferry on a foggy December night. In my opinion, the fog played well with the lights at night to make for a fun sightseeing adventure.

Looking for something fun and interesting to do - Oh and it's FREE. Take a ride on the Staten Island Ferry. You can see the Statue of Liberty and a great view of the Manhattan Skyline. Plenty of room to spread out and get a good view. They also sell snacks onboard and there are bathrooms as well. It's worth it to just ride even if you don't visit Staten Island or Manhattan.
