About
Park located in the East Village that was the scene of a big uprising in 1991 when a decision was made to evict the park's homeless in order to renovate; today, the park is pretty and quiet, but is still home to many who have no where else to go.

While Lonely Planet has a paragraph dedicated to this small urban park, Tompkins Square Park is just a normal one with lawn, fountain and basketball court. Locals may find it useful and convenient but tourists can simply skip this place.

Tompkins Square Park, formerly a place of riots which forced the park to close years ago. It’s cleaned up nicely with lots of benches to sit on to read, meditate or people watch. In warmer months there is live music. And if you get a chance, you can stop by Rays Candy across the street for some fried Oreos and other goodies. The park has a large playground, dirty bathrooms and many dogs. Also a place to picnic and free food for those who need it on Sunday afternoons.

Parking on side streets, with some streets closed so you can enjoy walking and enjoying the Alphabet City neighborhood. A must visit.

This is the neighborhood green space, a welcome oasis in a generally low-income and dense area. This park has a terrible reputation as being dangerous from decades ago, but I found it peaceful and well-maintained. Lovely.

Took a stroll through this park and there isn’t anything particularly pretty or interesting. People watching is entertaining and we certainly have a good laugh about the strange people we encountered here. Probably the only place in NYC that I felt uneasy. I definitely wouldn’t go here after dark.

Never heard of it but some guy in a band called Mumford wrote a song about it so it meant I had to go there.

It’s a generic looking US urban park in a fairy pleasant area near the Washington Arch. Probably worth visiting just to enjoy the walk.

Apparently there’s a bar you can only access via a public pay phone nearby so couple it with getting hammered in a bootleg boozer and you can make a day of it.

I made a quick visit when I’m the area purely due to the Mumford and Sons song so didn’t stay long. It seemed pleasant enough during the daytime for a short walk.

This park isn’t really anything special and doesn’t seem like it would feel safe after dark. Apart from the public toilets (avoid unless you’re desperate) and the dog watching, there’s really nothing to see.

I went to Tompkins Square park on a sunny saturday morning. It was not too busy but there were already some people enjoying the sun.
Usually it is not too noisy, so it is a good place to lay down and read a book.
