About
St. Patrick’s Cathedral is the Mother Church of the Archdiocese of New York and the seat of its Archbishop. Built by contributions large and small, it remains emblematic of the ascendance of religious freedom in the New World. As such, this international landmark is a beacon of hope for those who share the Catholic faith and a source of inspiration to the more than five million visitors of every religious denomination welcomed here each year. St. Patrick’s Cathedral has stood strong, overlooking 5th Ave, since 1879. The vibrancy of its windows, the beauty of its music and the purpose of its charitable outreach call us to respond to our shared humanity. Saint Patrick’s Cathedral is a must see destination when visiting New York. Our tour has been crafted to capture the essence of the church. It addresses the rich history of the past and the incredible art and architecture that makes it one of a kind. Timothy Cardinal Dolan, narrates the tour with Monsignor Robert Ritchie.

Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. - Kelly FNorth Attleboro, Massachusetts129 contributionsA beautiful in-depth walk through the cathedralThis was a well paced walk through the cathedral, guided by a seminarian who was incredibly well versed in the history of the cathedral. Since it was just the 3 of us, we could stop, ask questions, and share our observations together. We went into the crypt and onto the main alter and talked about several of the beautiful small alters that line both side walls. Anthony showed us pictures and drawings from the archives of the early days of the cathedral to give us some perspective compared to the surroundings today. Although we’ve been to the cathedral before, this gave us a wonderful new view of an iconic New York landmark.Visited February 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 4 February 2024

- charles s150 contributionsA must seeIf you have never been to see this Cathedral it needs to be on your list of things to see. This is a stunning gothic style cathedral right in the heart of NYC. I found that no matter your religious affiliation you can enjoy the beauty and reverence of this building. you only ned about 30 mins to walk around the inside and can fit this between most other tourist activities.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 9 April 2024
- PeteFredericksburg, Virginia1,230 contributionsThe gothic ArchitectureIt’s the building with the “can’t miss” gothic architecture. The website mentions two famous people associated with the cathedral, Babe Ruth and Vince Lombardy, which I read in their respective biographies. However, I really thought I read something about LaGuardia being associated with it. I used my visit to light and say prayers at the prayer candle stations.Visited April 2024Travelled soloWritten 9 April 2024
- Anna ETowcester, United Kingdom337 contributionsSerenity in a crazy city!I’m not a religious person but I like visiting cathedrals/ old churches as I find the architecture and history quite interesting. There’s almost always a quiet calm about them which offers respite from the craziness of a city! St Patrick’s is free to enter and has a bag check which is quick and simple. It’s a beautiful place inside and out and worth a visit.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 19 May 2024

- Jose Carlos GMalaga, Spain77 contributionsImpressive cathedral with live organ musicWhen we went to St. Patrick's Cathedral on our trip to New York (May 14-20) it just so happened that there was a live organ concert going on. It was on the afternoon of Friday, May 17. Entering a cathedral like this, with so much tradition and that I have seen in so many movies, and with the addition of organ music, was even more impressive. Because of the concert there were a lot of people but we didn't get overwhelmed. We liked the visit.Visited May 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 27 May 2024

Stunning! Mass was wonderful; plenty of room as it is ginormous and Eucharist went quickly despite the crowd! A must experience for all Catholics and really, everyone for touring a holy and beautiful space! NYC is so packed with commercialism and craziness that sitting and praising God is a restful and needed stop- maybe several times!

The church is free but you can give donations. They are renovating it. This is a working church, people are praying. Very quiet and reverent. Not a tour. You just walk in. You need 30 min-60 min to see. Very beautiful. You can light candles to the saints.

We went on Friday, March 8, in the early evening. You can enter the church and take puctures. It is the largest gothic cathedral in the western hemisphere. It's beautiful inside. You can lite a candle in a few different areas and there is plenty of seating.

This cathedral is a landmark and really must be seen when visiting NYC and looking to cover the iconic places. Walk around the whole block, go inside if possible, and then wander across the street to take it all in - old world architecture surrounded and dwarfed by towering glass and steel.

I'm planning to visit the cathedral while in NYC. I'm interested in buying a guided tour, but I was wondering if it's possible to not buy it online but when I'm at the church. Can I do that? Or necessarily I need to buy it online?

If you have a smartphone, you can download the tour to your smartphone when you get to NYC and take the tour. Here is more information about the tour is available at the St Patrick's Cathedral Website.

Which Sunday mass is best to go to? Site lists Sunday masses at 7, 8, 9, 10:15, 12, and 9 and 12 say music, 10:15 says choir. Is there no music at 7 and 8? Is the choir best or music best experience?
Written 18 February 2020
Not sure about music at the early masses. The choir is amazing and the cathedral offers such a lovely sounding board and resonance that you get chills. You feel surrounded in music. Also applies for just organ music. I think it’s personal preference. In my opinion you can’t go wrong with either. Such a beautiful way to celebrate our Lord!
