About
Stonewall National Monument is a new national park unit located in Christopher Park, part of New York City's Historic Greenwich Village. It is a park in progress with limited services, and in the coming years services will be added to the park in cooperation with our partners. The Stonewall Inn, a bar located in Greenwich Village, New York City and the immediate area was the scene of events that began the modern struggle for the civil rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender (LGBT) Americans.

Neighbourhood: Greenwich Village
Commonly known as “the Village” to New Yorkers, it was here in Greenwich Village that both 1960’s counter culture and the LGBT movement were born. Famous for its bohemian past, head to Washington Square Park to get a feel for this diverse and energetic neighbourhood. You’ll find NYU students, street performers, skateboarders, kids frolicking in the fountain, and locals relaxing and playing chess. Stroll the streets to discover a mix of majestic town homes and hidden bars and restaurants that give this neighbourhood an old-school residential feel. When the sun goes down, check out one of the famous jazz or comedy clubs that still packs them in every night.
How to get there

Many people contributed to the LGBT gay rights movement. I was one of them and was eager to see this new visitor’s center, and see how people like
Me changed history. When I was a young man people like me were erased, and made to feel invisible. So I was kind of shocked to see that people like me are again invisible. The only people in the films were trans/gender fluid people
Of color. While it is vital that their stories are told, it is vital that all stories are told, including men like me who drove this moment for decades. I was deeply disappointed.

The Stonewall National Monument comprises of a small garden with statues, and the Stonewall Inn, a bar. Unfortunately, the visitor center was still under construction when I went. On a nice day, the Stonewall garden is a nice place to sit down and relax

How fortunate that the Stonewall Inn has been preserved as a reminder of the days when certain freedoms did not extend to all of our citizens. Besides the inn itself, the Stonewall National Monument across the street memorializes the fight for gay rights. It's worth a look and should be used as a teaching moment for the next generation, as we continue to strive for equality.

If you're in Manhattan/Greenwich Village, this is a worthwhile stop. The little garden area is lovely, and there's enough info on the placards to provide context for where you are and why it matters. (And it does matter.) It isn't large, but it's definitely important.

So important that this area has been noted and honored as historic. it was a little rebellion that grew into a huge movement, changing my life as well as the lives of millions of others. It is a sweet and pretty spot, lovely on a sunny day.

It has to be one of the smallest national parks but I found it to be very relaxing. It is pretty understated even though the gay community is not typically associated with that 🌈. Maybe it was the time of day but walking in it was serene in the middle of the Village. Nice to see a mixed crowd enjoying it.

It's hard to imagine what the heroes that stood up for their rights here had to go through... We are SO lucky today for what they did for humanity, not just for my LGBTQ(etc) community. The square is a beautiful little place, and you can spend as much or as little time here as you need to. But DO go if you are in NYC. With so much hatred against people who are different out there, it is such an important place to remind us we should never stop fighting for human rights and dignity...

My wife and I, along with our friend who is a gay man, deeply enjoyed this place. He had been here before it was made into a National Monument but was very happy to see it again. As a young lesbian growing up in Oklahoma, I never thought I would see something like Stonewall. It was deeply moving and very serene.

Highly Recommended to anyone but especially those who are LGBTQ+ because this is where our rights started.

We just walked over and sat in the park and enjoyed the historical significance of the Stonewall Inn and how far we've come in 50 years for Equality.

our first stop in NYC to pay our respects for 50 years since Stonewall. A really lovely monument. The statues depicting same sex love were very moving. How amazing that this is a national park?
