I didn't realize how beautiful the inside of the library is. We walked around just as if it were a museum. But, definitely take time to stroll some of the different rooms and see everything it has to offer. It's books and so much more.

Went there on our first day to NYC. Make sure you have your walking shoes on and ready to climb stairs. I had heeled boots. At the end, I was walking like a very old woman! It is a research library only and a museum not a lending library. Heard it just reopened after renovations. Was amazing and still being... More

The building is beautiful and there is a treasure inside it: the Rose Main Reading Room, from the floor to the ceiling it is a splendid place, completely restored. The entrance is free; there is no bureaucracy for tourists.

Wasn't sure if it would be worth the visit, but it was !! wish was had realised a free tour could be booked, but not on the day we were there ! The children section is lovely, with a Winnie-the -pooh exhibition while we were there. The corridors are very decorative. The little book shop inside is worth a visit.... More

We went there to see the two free exhibitions. It seems that the library often has exhibitions fitting into the time and season. The building itself is worthy seeing.

Iconic - like so many NYC landmarks but amazing 'in the flesh'. Its well worth a visit & is immense inside It's quite awe inspiring. Fabulous children's section on the ground floor (you enter on the first floor when using the front entrance). Wonderful wooden original phone booths & being a film buff I couldn't resist taking a photo from... More

If you visit NYC, then you must visit this public library. It looks like a small museum on the outside and very beautiful on the inside and it's in a great location; it's on 5th Ave which is a great avenue because it has a variety of shops, it's right next to Bryant Park, and it's a couple of blocks... This is worth an hour of anyone's time. No booking, no entrance fee, just turn up and wander through the huge expansive building. Grand old building which is very well cared for. Advice - great place to go if it's raining!

What an extraordinary beautiful building, very interesting. Beautiful in every way. My husband loves libraries and we visited this particular one after looking through the New York guidebook. Does not disappoint.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
