Tourist Revenue-gathering Con

We genuinely wanted to experience a gospel mass in the congregation of a Harlem church but were bitterly disappointed by the two and a half hours of very average preaching, prolonged church notices, recorded music and repeated requests for money. At the appointed time the hundred and fifty or so people who had been queuing were herded upstairs to a secluded balcony where you could see nothing unless you were in the first few rows. This is when we should have left as we actually wanted to attend a church service and meet local church goers. The regular congregation was down in the body of the church though we could not determine how many of them there were. Upstairs there were several marshalls who kept a very close eye on us... quite reasonably no talking or photography. Quite unreasonably we were exhorted for money several times over the course of the morning... many attempted to leave at the second offertory but their exit was blocked by overly forceful church people. The music was recorded and not at all uplifting ‘though there was some desultory hand clapping below... heard, not seen. Apparently there was also some interpretative dance to the recorded music. we couldn’t have been further removed from the service had we been out on the street. We would have been more than happy to contribute to the church had we felt welcomed and included as we have been at church services the world over, but this was simply a revenue gathering exercise so it was very disappointing and we would not recommend the Canaan Baptist Church of Christ at all.

OK, we got that the service is not entertainment but a religious ceremony for its community of worshippers. But tourists are herded to the balcony where they are completely separated from the service and the support basket is sent around numerous times. The worshippers have a different entrance from the tourists and neither group can see each other. If you want to observe a Baptist ceremony - the pastor and the choir- in Harlem this is your place, but if you want to involve yourself in a religious ceremony with the locals, this is not your place.

Although the church is housed in what used to be a theatre please be aware that this is a church holding a religious ceremony and it’s not a show such as Sister Act. Tourists are welcomed and sit upstairs whilst the congregation is based downstairs. If you are religious then you may find it more interesting than most. If you aren’t religious and are there just for the gospel singing then you will get that, and it’s fantastic, but then you may be bored very quickly by the rest of the ceremony. Many tourists were not respectful to the whole ceremony when I was there and talked throughout which I found offensive and I am not in the slightest bit religious. There are breaks in the ceremony where you will be able to get up and leave, be aware that you can’t just get up and leave whenever you feel like it. No rucksacks/backpacks allowed and hats must be removed - and no photographs!

Came as a tourist based on a recommendation from a guidebook and at the request of my mother. Visitors are seated upstairs and can see what's going on as it is theatre style seating and there are televisions broadcasting as well. The music is nice and the congregation is enthusiastic. The service is 2.5 hours long but there are periods where you may leave. If you're a believer in God you may enjoy this experience.

After waiting 45 minutes in a queue in the sun while their worker shouts, and after the bags control, we expected something a little bit different. The tourists are located upstairs in a place not too confortable with bad views... they get a paper with a very small explanation. People who work there are very busy kicking anyone who try to make a photo... instead of explaining anything about their beliefs and their roots.

The celebration is soo long (more than 2.5 hours)... so at the beginning it's interesting, but after 2 hours most of the tourists get tired and leave

What a desappointment. A choir from a retirement home, singing out of tune. Unacceptable for a self-respecting gospel troupe. I had referred to the green guide to New York to take my family to attend a mass with a beautiful gospel song, but we were all disappointed by the performance. Especially since there are a lot of ads. Move on, there are probably other churches in Harlem with better choirs.
