Description:

Grand Central Terminal is the most extraordinary public space in New York...

Grand Central Terminal is the most extraordinary public space in New York City. Opened to the public in 1913, this historic train terminal is a world-famous landmark in Midtown. Its rich history is a story of immense wealth and great engineering. Grand Central is one of the busiest train stations in the world, with approximately 750,000 visitors every day. It is the home of Metro-North Railroad, a subway station, iconic restaurants, shops, and the world's most alluring Apple Store. Some of the highlights to see along your tour of Grand Central include the opal-faced clock, valued at $20 million, above the Information Booth, the Largest Tiffany Glass Clock in the World below the 48-foot, 1500-ton Transportation statue overlooking 42nd Street at Park Avenue, and the mystifying acoustics of the Whispering Gallery in front of the Oyster Bar and Restaurant. Audio and guided tours are available for those with a passion for history. More information regarding tours and ways to plan your visit can be found on the Grand Central Terminal website.

Fascinating

So lively sitting here and watching the world go by as you have a coffee and snack. So much going on here with the fresh food market and all the little tidy shops for nice gifts.

Just go there and soak up the atmosphere in the main hall then explore the shops and food court. The Nordic market was on when we were there which had some great food.

Grand Central Terminal is a must see! The main hall is just wow! Look up and see the astrological signs painted on the ceiling and the beautiful golden clock on top of the information booth. Wander the corridors to find eateries, and shops, as well as train stations! Visit the Whispering Gallery, where you can talk into one corner and... More

Grand Central is full of rich history and great stories so best to read about the station before visiting. Beyond the incredie ceiling, Grand Central has some great places to dine as well, such as Michael Jordans or the Oyster House.

I frequent Grand Central Terminal (GCT) as a commuter. It is always the same, architecturally, and always changing with the people and the seasons. The astrological astronomical ceiling is a must always! The new Northern Food Court offers delicious pastries, sandwiches (smorsbord), porridges for all times of the day, good coffee and a fine bar.

Go into this building and look up. We always recommend this to newcomers to the City. Take the tour and discover hidden spaces and history you never knew. Stop into one of the many and varied shops or restaurants and have a real New York experience seeing a crossroad of humanity. You never know what you'll see in the main... More

The terminal is beautiful. The stores range from low to high end. It's the epitome of New York City. You have to just go for the experience at least once in your life.

We took an accidental short cut through the Grand Central Terminal on our way from shopping on Fifth Avenue and returning to our hotel in Times Square. It was a great surprise and there is an adorable Christmas Market there in December with many cute kiosks for your Christmas shopping. The main entry is even more impressive than the movies... More

I have long since wondered what could be so special about a railway station, many good examples of those in London. This was not only built grand it has been kept grand, whilst many urge to modernise, this has been left alone and is all the better for it.

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
