Grand Central Terminal is the most extraordinary public space in New York...

Grand Central Terminal is the most extraordinary public space in New York City. Opened to the public in 1913, this historic train terminal is a world-famous landmark in Midtown. Its rich history is a story of immense wealth and great engineering. Grand Central is one of the busiest train stations in the world, with approximately 750,000 visitors every day. It is the home of Metro-North Railroad, a subway station, iconic restaurants, shops, and the world's most alluring Apple Store. Some of the highlights to see along your tour of Grand Central include the opal-faced clock, valued at $20 million, above the Information Booth, the Largest Tiffany Glass Clock in the World below the 48-foot, 1500-ton Transportation statue overlooking 42nd Street at Park Avenue, and the mystifying acoustics of the Whispering Gallery in front of the Oyster Bar and Restaurant. Audio and guided tours are available for those with a passion for history. More information regarding tours and ways to plan your visit can be found on the Grand Central Terminal website.

We love visiting Grand Central. It is a perfect hub for people watching, transportation, and dining! You could spend hours here. We actually spent a full afternoon because the inclement weather outside pushed us indoors. We were able to eat, shop, and visit. It was a fun way to capture sights and sounds of the wonderful people of NYC!

Walking in here you can just imagine what it was like when train travel was the major form of transportation. Just bustling with people and activity. I think of soldiers coming home or departing. Missionaries. Pioneers heading to the west. Just a great piece of architecture that will last for ages.

Even if you are not travelling to/from Grand Central you should make it a point to stop by. The building, as many other older ones in the city is fabulous. So much detail and beauty at every turn. It is also a great place to grab a bite in one of the numerous eateries and do some people watching!

I never thought this building would be so grand. Gosh it is just brilliant. The ceilings are so worth seeing. A lot of security guards all around, which makes you feel so much safer. Just run in and out, I would allow 10/15 mins here.

You see Grand Central station in many films and it is really strange standing there. There is a lot of hustle and bustle which you would expect from such a big stations.

I love going to Grand Central Terminal. I used to have to commute through it and did not mind the crowds as it's cool to see all us "ants marching". The in and outdoor architectural details mesmerise me. Look everywhere. There are many spots accessible to the public, it's just most people do not know about them. So....explore!

Staying in Midtown

Neighbourhood Profile
Midtown
This is the iconic New York that so many visitors imagine before they visit—spectacular skyscrapers like the Chrysler Building and Empire State Building, iconic public buildings like Grand Central Terminal and the New York Public Library, and the non-stop hustle and bustle of the city streets. Fifth Avenue is a shopper's heaven where you can find every kind of store imaginable, with fashion brands ranging from the affordable to the ultra-fancy. Visit the Rockefeller Center to experience towering Art Deco grandeur, and foodies will love the busy restaurants that stay open late in Koreatown. After dark, Midtown calms down a bit, but at any time of day or night it still feels 100% New York.
