i took a boat out of Harkers Island and first stop was Shackleford Banks. While I may have wished someone warned me I would be getting out of the boat in a couple inches of water, it was worth the wet shoes. Several wild horses were near the drop point so I didn't have to go far to see them.... More

Experienced an excellent shelling trip on Shackleford Banks. . Booked a private small skiff for transportation over. Was picked up five hours later. Walked about 10 miles total. Check out the sound side during low tide and then move to the ocean side. Wear sturdy shoes as you may bog down some. Finding the best place to cross over to... More

We spent the afternoon at this wonderful island, part of a national park. There were so few people which was great as it was like having our own private beach. Only saw the horses as we were being ferried in however we did not do any exploring to where they might have been. Bring everything you need because once you... More

I came here by ferry and it was amazing, I would definitely go back. I walked up and down the island where the ferry stops, and I saw both wild horses and several crabs. Also did a lot of shell spotting with my boyfriend, he found a total o f 6 intact conch shells (nothing living inside, no worries.) (we... More

It was interesting to see an island with just horses (though we only saw a few coming in, pic of one of the 5 we saw attached) that are on a National Registry. While there it was us and another couple but not a horse one. What we did see was a lot of litter. To be an uninhibited island... More

Went on a Friday morning in may, 65 and cloudy...rain in the forecast...but once we got off the boat, the sun came out and out adventure began. We walked the beach line and the flies were brutal...BRUTAL! Found a few shells but nothing spectacular. We even went around the the opposite side where they are suppsosedly the best. They were... This was the first time we have ever seen wild horses. They were so majestic! They were also easy to spot and get close to. (Federal law says you must keep a 50 foot distance.) The horses did not look bothered by people at all. The beach was also amazing, with lots of large shells, a bayside with calm swimming... More

Whether you get there by local ferry service or your own, it's well worth going. The shells abundant and pretty.

A wonderful beach to hang out on! We found lots of great shells and saw ponies almost the whole time we were there (4+ hours). There is a bathroom but it's a HIKE. Lots to see and explore but you need to bring everything including water, chairs, and sunscreen. Also would suggest a change of clothes or bathing suits even... More

We visited mid-April. We chose the West end of the island and came with 3 kids under 10. I read other reviews and packed accordingly. We brought a lunch, and bags for shells. Next time I would bring the kids drawstring backpack style bags for their shells, and a backpack each for my husband and I for supplies. We brought... More
