We are active in the lowrider community in Texas and looked forward to coming to Chicano Park for its history of lowrider culture. The park was clean and had nice restrooms but the people there were not welcoming. If you want to be called pendeja by a stranger this is the place! This outing definitely cast a negative tone on an otherwise awesome SD trip. I would not recommend this park for people that may look out of place.

As a former local visiting Chicano Park with locals, I expected a cultural odyssey into the breathtaking Mexican-American murals of the park, instead, in broad daylight, we were first approached by one relatively benign park denizen, ostensibly to give us cultural information on the murals. We should have understood then and there that we did not blend in, were unwelcome, and should have left. About five minutes later, a second park denizen, drunk and likely in an altered state, approached the male in our group, aggressively attempting to start a fight, and ultimately threatening his life. We were able to walk away without harm, but were terribly shaken, sure that something much, much worse could have easily happened. This was clearly not an isolated incident, given the presence of citizen patrols in the park (they were likely the reason the denizen did not come back after us after we de-escalated the situation and attempted to exit the park), and given the racial violence that had occurred only two years prior in the park (4 people were killed in a fight in the park, likely started by non-minorities). It is a shame that a park that is supposed to stand for cultural diversity has been reduced to such a shameful reflection of real racial relations.

This is a very radical park. I am a blogger and a critic of the anti-American, pro-communist and pro-Chicano ultra nationalist murals in the park. The local extremists got wind that five of us were coming for a picnic and to discuss the murals in private. They widely defamed us as Nazis and white supremacists in order to raise a mob of 500 against us to run us out of the park. Google "patriots tour of Chicano Park" to learn more about the anti-American features of the subversive park murals. Also google "Patriot Picnic Chicano Park" to learn more about the event I described here.

I love this park. I’ve read some of the reviews below and can’t believe anyone would not love it also. I highly suggest you YouTube the short documentary to understand what you are seeing. This park is a testament to very determined and brave natives. The artwork is breathtaking and significance of monumental importance. In our current political climate it is not surprising that some are “unimpressed”. I was moved beyond words. Beautiful

This area of San Diego had been continuously inhabited by Mexicans, then Mexican-Americans, since far earlier than the founding of the United States. A vibrant community when the city of San Diego decided to erect the San Diego Bay-Coronado Bridge in the early 60's, the Mexican-American community, already in a fight for its life, looked like it was going to suffer a final, fatal blow. Cut off from the bay by the U.S. Navy and various supporting industrial sites, and rezoned to become a repository for old, junked cars (Yonkes), it looked like there was no way to preserve the historic neighborhood. Even its name was taken from it, when the city rechristened the area Logan Heights. Bisected by the pylons that supported the bridge, residents were promised a park would be built along the now razed streets. But when in 1970 bulldozers appeared not for the purpose of building a park, but erecting a California Highway Patrol facility, the residents took action and blocked the bulldozers with their bodies. The area finally did become a park, shaded by enormous concrete pylons rather than trees. Community activists have decorated these pylons with murals that depict much of the history and cultural themes of the community, and Chicano Park organizations can provide guides that help unravel the thorny history and artwork depicted. There is much, much more history and drama associated with this site. Visitors should visit the various websites of the Chicano Park supporting foundations and community organizations for more information and understanding of the cultural and political forces still at play. See www.chicanoparksandiego.com for a virtual tour. Chicano-Park.org, stewards of the park, provides a calendar of cultural and community events and can be contacted for walking tours of the area. Nearby there are bakeries, a supermarket and restaurants.

A visit to Chicano Park was suggested to us in order to experience the local Mexican-American culture. If dirty restrooms with no soap, screaming kids asking for hand-outs, and drug dealing gang members are a culture to you, then visit. Barrio Logan itself is an unsafe place with bars on the windows and doors, prison-like fences, curfew in public parks, ...If you have a death wish, then visit Chicano Park.
However, if you wish to see a real culture and beauty, pay a visit to Balboa Park, Old Town, and the Mission de Alcalá, check the beaches and beach towns like La Jolla or Coronado, just stay away from the Barrio.

Pretty cool place to go see some colorful and lively murals that have a historical meaning. Not in such a good area... so I wouldn't recommend going down there at night just to be safe.

Many murals adorn the supports of the Coronado Bridge on-ramps. Some political, some simply artistic, all fun to experience. Felt perfectly safe, unless you feel threatened by tents of homeless people nearby. Right next to Mercado del Barrio, a semi-glitzy collection of shops and restaurants where any apprehensive people can wait.

Food, drink and mementos abound in this appropriately named and naturally developed area of San Diego. Tributes to the heritage, music and fine art abound in a friendly and light adventure. Worth an afternoon, save time for Lunch and dinner.

Throughout the United States history there have been groups of people who have been marginalized, Chicanos are one of those groups. However, the local Americans of Mexican descent (Chicanos) were able to put forward art for the world to see, for the world to grasp the struggles of these people. In the art we see a blend of old world and new which is as it should be. I suggest you see it soon before gentrification of the community changes everything.
