Four hours passed in the blink of an eye!
We visited the Museum today and had an awesome time. Four hours passed in the blink of an eye. We talked to many of the Docents onboard who were only too pleased to help with questions and point you towards talks and tours on every deck. We'd recommend the USS Midway as a must-do while you're in San Diego.

    USS MIDWAY WELL WORTH SEEING
If you are into vintage military vessels well worth the personal walking tour. Bit better than the Yorktown in Charlestown S.C. , more planes and access better mapped out. Had veterans at various points to answer questions and give explanations. Display boards and information available at various points. Great view from the flight deck of Downtown San Diego and existing Military base. Parking right next to the ship was easy.

Great way to spend the day
For whatever reason we had never visited the Midway. We booked tickets ahead (although not necessary to do so). There are all kinds of exhibits and special small tours around the whole ship. Places to eat - and you need it as you'll want to spend about 3 hours. Fabulous views from the deck. An abundance of friendly, knowledgeable volunteer docents.

    BIG SHIP
The museum ship is about three city blocks from our hotel. The Ship was laid down for its construction in late 1943, but not commissioned but with many anti-aircraft guns (lessoned learned from previous naval engagement during the war). Commissioned in September of 1945 (just months after WWII) and was active until 1991. Modifications eliminated all the original anti-aircraft Arment, and the deck super modified to include an angle flight deck for jet aircraft landings. The Midway is the longest-serving carrier in U.S. history. When commissioned, it was the largest ship in the world, at 1,001 feet 4 inches long. Today.. Last engagement was in Desert Storm. We then went all over the inside of the island bridge, then into the hanger deck that has one great video in a theater forward; outlining the battle of Midway (which the ship is named for) to several WWII aircraft here and there. The hanger deck includes a massive eating area for everything from chicken salad sandwiches to PRIME RIB! Below the hanger deck it was into many / many / many compartments, including the #2 Engine Room. You are given an audio device to carry around, and just by bumping an audio key sign in various areas you receive an excellent narrative of the compartment or item in front of you (all the info is preloaded on the portable device, and the bump on the sign just tells the device what recording to play. We spent 6.5 hours, and 9,000 Fitbit steps, touring this magnificent craft.

    Great Experience
This was our fist time visiting an aircraft carrier. We have visited a few battleships on the East Coast, but this was a completely different experience. My wife and I even commented on the fact that there is so much to see and do onboard the USS Midway. They say to allow 3-4 hours to take it all in and if you truly want to experience everything, that might be a slightly conservative estimate. Be sure to take the free tour of the Island on the flight deck...you get to see the bridge and the flight control area as well. Also, engage with as many of the volunteers as you can. We spoke with several during our time onboard and most of them had actually served on the vessel which provided living history...something that will not always be an option in the future. Very impressive and we wouldn't have to think twice about visiting again when we return to the area.

    What a history lesson
This was my second aircraft carrier I have visited along with the Intrepid in NYC. The Staff here is amazing and they were doing lessons at different stations throughout the day. Each 'lesson' was about 30 minutes and had a veteran talking about the job they performed or how something worked on the ship. I visited with my 3 daughters, ages 9-14. All 3 were engaged and had a wonderful time. I would certainly go back here again on my next visit to San Diego.

Favorite part of my San Diego trip
My husband, daughter, and I recently toured the USS Midway while on vacation. This was the highlight of our trip. We spent over 4 hours exploring the ship. We found it so interesting. We loved that we could explore at our own speed, rather than a guided tour. It is a lot of walking up and down stairs, so portions may not be suitable for a person with a mobility issue. Highly recommend!

    Planes and boats!
If you are in town and like history this is a must see and do. Plenty of history and planes to look at. It’s a museum ship so not a lot of places to move around but a great overall experience with or without kids. Highly recommend.

Place for all ages to enjoy!
I have a 14 yrs boy and 6yrs girl along with my wife, they all enjoyed the tours provided by veteran volunteers and self guided walk around. The ship was so big and lots to do it took us 4 hours to see almost everything. Highly recommend to visit this place.

    Highlight of our trip
This was an amazing museum. We were able to see the bridge, the kitchens, laundry, operating room and living spaces in addition to the many helicopters and planes. It is staffed with volunteers who were very informative and friendly. The bridge tours close at 4 so keep that in mind.

First and foremost having just turned 30 and being by myself means Im far from the demographic that would probably go here normally. As a matter of fact when I first walked in, I assumed I would spend no more than 30 mins total… I ended up spending 5 hours.

You get to explore almost the WHOLE ship and see how hard and complex life was aboard these massive hunks of metal. You will do quite a bit of stairs and while there are generally elevator access, theres a lot of stepping over the door openings or ducking. Just beware.

But I would highly recommend everyone to check out the Midway. I can’t wait to bring my family back and see it again. Seriously if you’re in the SD area looking for a unique experience, don't sleep on this attraction

Miss to board the USS Midway on the way to the airport. This gigantic naval vessel tells a lot of history for the gallant men & women. Will come back here in the future to experience this glorious icon.

We have been here before but on Veteran's Day we attended a great ceremony onboard. Everyone was so nice and I appreciated that on Veteran's Day, veterans are admitted for free and treated so nice. Highly recommend and bring kids to see the massive ship and learn its history.

There’s so much to explore in this museum and former US Navy aircraft carrier which was in service for almost 50 years and participated in both the Vietnam and Gulf wars. Explore the bowels of the ship and its different rooms, or admire the different aircraft on display (there’s a lot of them! ). The museum provides a free audio guide which is very informative. The best part of the museum though (in my humble opinion) are the docents! Many of the volunteers are veterans who have either served on the Midway before or have somehow been involved in the navy or military aviation. I personally had the opportunity to talk to a docent who was a Sea King pilot with >4500 hours on the type and another who was an A7 Corsair pilot with Vietnam war combat experience. It was truly a blast listening to them talk about their experiences and the aircraft that they love so much. My visit of 3 hours wasn’t long enough and I would definitely come again if I ever return to San Diego!

We absolutely enjoyed Midway. We were able to see several parts of the ship and explore. The movie they show is definitely worth seeing. My husband loved the tour they gave him of the flight deck operations. It's worth the money and going early was good, less people.

What an amazing inspirational place the USS MIDWAY was. Not crowded at all. And we really enjoyed listening to the presentation by the vets who has served on carriers! Prices for food and souvenirs were really high. Eat before you go!! We spent 5 hours there and didn’t feel like it was too long at all. Super fun!!
