I reached the Mission by taking the green line transit towards Santee - at my first attempt I got off at the stop called Mission Valley Centre, but this is a shopping mall - you need to go a few stops further. Once off the tram you bear right to the main road, then turn left as far as the... More

We have so many missions here in Southern California that I feel if one is a resident, it is almost compulsory to visit at least one of them in one's lifetime; afterall, it is part of local history; that said, when one says the word "mission" , Mision San Diego de Alcala comes to mind, so in my estimation, if... Father Junipera Serra walked up the Coast of California establishing Missions. The Mission San Diego de Alcala was the first Mission on his journey. Today you can visit the architectural dig that is on-going to discover more of the past of the mission Indians and the padres who came to convert them. The mission itself is beautiful and peaceful, and... More

The oldest mission in California, Mision San Diego de Alcala is a beautiful mix of history, natural beauty and spirituality. The grounds are luscious with colorful flowers and plants - a photographer's (even amateur's) delight! Sit on a bench and take it all in. The museum and artifacts take you back to California's beginnings. The basilica is rustic, but beautiful... More

The Mission is well maintained, tucked away and perched up on top of a hill above Mission Valley. The grounds are pretty and the view is amazing. Take a picnic lunch and enjoy after spending some time in the small museum and mission. Just passed the museum a bit further up the hill is a nice park with a gazebo... More

Like many missions in California, Mission San Diego de Alcala is a historic and beautiful place to visit. The grounds are well kept and the architecture has been restored but it still has that old world look and feel. The church can be reserved for weddings. It is one of the few missions that has a a catholic school behind... More

Seeing this wonderful part of the California Mission-chain is a terrific way to understand how the state, and San Diego in general, came to be. It is beautifully preserved and staffed by knowing and loving volunteers. The chapel is gorgeous, the grounds lush and quiet. Take time to tour with a docent, or simply use the guides for a well... California's oldest mission is located in Mission Valley so you don't have to drive far to enjoy this beautiful setting along with a history lesson. Kids love it and there's even a small hut made of tree branches filled with metates (Native American grinding rocks) for the kids to try. The mission church and chapel are well preserved with 3... Considering that it is the oldest mission church in California, it is well maintained without losing its rustic charm. A bit hard to find to use a GPS. Try to catch the Sunday mass for a more meaningful visit.

Very well kept grounds and beautiful gardens. I would recommend visiting. The museum is small but full of information. The gardens are very relaxing and beautiful to spend time in. Lots of photo opportunities as well.
