About
Once an infamous gambling den and brothel, the historic Gaslamp Quarter has since transformed into a lively neighborhood. Here, you can stroll down 5th avenue, catch a film at the Balboa Theater, or visit the gallery of Chuck Jones, creator of many Looney Tunes and Warner Bros characters. Plan your visit on the weekend to catch the Gaslamp Artisan Market. There are also many themed events held throughout the year like the Gaslamp Music and Art Festival in May. Explore the quarter on a tour of San Diego, which often includes a stop here. Travelers recommend the San Diego hop-on-hop-off trolley tour as a great option. – Tripadvisor

Excellent atmosphere which we visited several times throughout our trip, at night it becomes a hive of activity however despite being a big party we were always able to grab an unplanned table somewhere!

I visited here 30 years ago on a family vacation. Back then, this was a bustling lively place and it was nice to be here.

I’m here this week for a conference & do not want to leave my hotel. When I do, it smells like urine, everywhere. And it seems the dregs of humanity have taken up all of the corners on the streets. It’s filthy. Worse than the French quarter dirty & people are smoking who knows what out of glass pipes on the street.

It’s bad. I will reconsider ever attending another conference here. As a woman, I only feel safe walking around with my colleagues. And no one likes walking through urine puddles.

I was so excited to come back to the Gaslamp Quarter after visiting during a conference about five years ago. I was shocked by the transformation. I witnessed open drug use in the streets multiple times (methadone, not just MJ) and had to actively avoid the human excrement, drug use waste, food waste piled on the sidewalks. Zombie-like drug users were everywhere - on every single block. This isn't just homelessness. This is something else, entirely. Many of the restaurants and shops have turned into "seedier" establishments. While I wasn't necessarily scared for my safety, I couldn't wait to leave. I would not come here with children and would strongly recommend visiting in a group of people.

What a fun area! It reminds me of a smaller Duvall Street in Key West. Bars, restaurants and nightclubs, souvenir stores and great music. Tons of great people watching. Great way to spend an afternoon or evening in San Diego if you’re looking for fun vibes.

I came to San Diego with my wife November 15-19, 2023. She was attending a conference at a big hotel on the harbor. I was free to explore San Diego on my own. I was in San Diego 20 years ago for a conference myself. Some areas have gotten better, others worse.
Our hotel this time was only 5 blocks from the Gaslamp Quarter, so I had opportunity to explore this area a few times. I did not see very much that one could consider "historic' other than a few old buildings that had some classy architecture. Mostly, newer stores have moved in, there are no interesting or novel shops. Restaurants (I tried 3 different ones) are not that great. Night life is pretty boring. I just do not see anything much worth coming here for.

Desolate, not what it used to be in the past. The area has many closed storefronts and homeless walking around. Several restaurants and bars remain but the area had few visitors during the day. It is sad because the area used to be vibrant and lively.

My husband and I visited the Gaslamp District together for the first time since pre-pandemic and it was fun and safe.

There were a couple of encampments on the fringes of the Gaslamp District but we saw very few homeless and none of what had previously been posted here. Maybe the city cleaned it up…I don’t know. But our experience was only positive.

The district is still recovering from the pandemic so many businesses are shuttered but just as many or more are open. We easily found places to visit and places to eat/drink.

If you are wondering if you should visit, you should. This is still a great place!

We came here once back in 2015 and it was a lot of fun… energetic night life with lots of decent eateries and bars. So, when we came this year, we stopped in during the day for lunch and noticed LOTS of homeless people walking all over and about a block of their tents and personal stuff nearby. Not very good for tourists, since this is mostly a tourist destination. Sure hope they can clean this up, soon!

Gaslamp needs to be cleaned up ASAP. I feel unsafe and uncomfortable. Mentally ill, screaming, naked, actively urinating, unstable people everywhere.

It smelled of urine and it has an aggressive homeless population. I didn’t feel
safe. This is not family friendly area. The restaurants were subpar and overpriced based on the ambiance and less than friendly service.
