- Basinman561 contributionsWorthwhile exhibits! We spent fun 3.5 hours exploring the quality exhibits. There is a lot of airplane, jet, space, and military history packed inside. The docents were quite helpful in explaining exhibits. Many interactive exhits for kids.Visited October 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 October 2023
- 10OrchardWorcester, United Kingdom586 contributionsExcellent insight into the history of flightGreat museum for those like me whose knowledge of the history of flight is limited. The exhibition is well curated with interesting displays, films, interactive stuff (!) and brilliant models. I loved the displays of the men behind the names (Boeing, Cessna etc), the history of Black Americans in flight, the commercial companies who opened up the skies in the 1950s and the story of Montgomery. Best of all was the Lindbergh exhibit explaining the part played by San Diego and the map showing the route to Paris. The only disappointment was the 3D film which was way too short after we had waited 30 minutes to enter the cinema! Highly recommend.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 23 December 2023
- Richard SAngmering, United Kingdom786 contributionsOutstanding museumWe pipped in late afternoon to this amazing museum. The ford building itself is spectacular, but inside, the exhibits were aomething else. To see the Apollo 9 space capsul was mind blowing and the aircaft displays were so welk peesented. The interactive elements brough history to life! This has to be a nust visit location, set in the spectacular Balboa Park.Visited December 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 29 December 2023
- MelvinPusfingerTemecula, California693 contributionsEnjoyable time, very stimulatingThis is a great place to bring the kids if you are in San Diego come including Balboa Park. Adult tickets are $28 and kids are $22. But you can get half price in February for museums, including this one. But even at full price, this is worthwhile. There are plenty of interactive things to do for children of all ages. And it is very educational. Plenty of large aircraft to view. Also, there is a motion simulator, that is not on like star tours in Disneyland and it is free. All in all the very enjoyable experience.Visited February 2024Travelled with familyWritten 10 February 2024
- Susan CNolensville, Tennessee42 contributionsGreat museumThis was a most enjoyable museum to visit. Although small, they have a large collection of planes and do a wonderful job highlighting the history of aviation. The docents were amazing, so knowledgeable and eager to share what they knew. We really enjoyed speaking with all of them. I highly recommend visiting it when you are in Balboa park .Visited March 2024Travelled as a coupleWritten 20 March 2024
- extravelagentHonolulu, Hawaii400 contributionsIt was coolWent with my daughter. It was pretty fun. Kinda pricey though. $50+ for an adult and student? I guess it was free parking so that helped. I liked the commercial airlines memorabilia and the aviation wings collection. Fun displays. Our favorite was the theatre that had the 3D movies with seat movement. Pretty cool. We spent about 1.5 hours there, I think that was enough. Not overly crowded as it was supposed to rain but I would hate to see it on a weekend. The replica planes outside were also cool. Would I come back? I probably would with grandkids as there are lots to look at.Visited April 2024Travelled with familyWritten 8 April 2024
- Amy G3 contributionsFive stars! A must for air and space enthusiasts and everyone else! This museum is such a gem! I work at NASA and have been to many air and space museums, this is one of the best! So many great interactive exhibits in the space section. My kids loved it! Highly recommend!Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 19 June 2024

Very good museum of air travel history, even if you aren't American it is still interesting, with real planes on the ground and suspended from the ceiling and all manor of related items, uniforms etc. If you are a US citizen it will probably mean a lot more to you and you will spend more time reminiscing over things. It is laid out in a circular time line although some how the space bit is near the beginning which confused us a little. If you skip it you have to backtrack to find it again.

This museum is in Balboa Park in San Diego, right across from the Automotive Museum. We were greeted at the door by a charming guy who briefed us on COVID requirements, then directed us to the ticket counter. Senior admission was only $18pp.
I was so impressed by the wealth of information about those inducted in to the Hall of Fame and by how much they had displayed about NASA and the space race with the USSR in the 1960's. There was a great deal to see and the descriptions were very detailed. There were a couple of animated mannequins, one was of Amelia Earhart that was well done. And on several of the statues, they had put on masks, I suppose to remind everyone to keep theirs on!
And I enjoyed seeing the several videos they had.
A great history of the very dawn of flight, starting with Leonardo da Vinci, with a lot of emphasis on the 2 World Wars and then of course, up through the Apollo missions.
We later found out that due to enhanced pandemic restrictions in San Diego county, as issued by the Governor, they were going to close starting November 14th, the very next day. So we were lucky to catch them before they closed!

Visited the San Diego Air and Space Museum with the family. We enjoyed the visit and especially the historical aspect of it, but it is quite small and very dense so there is a limit to how long one can spend there.
The museum really has a wide range of things to see, including some amazing original displays of historical aircraft and spacecraft. The way to enjoy it is to just wander around and read the information plaques and admire the displays. But it is impossible to avoid noting just how tightly packed things are and it becomes hard to enjoy one thing at a time.
But, still very much worth a visit.

We went down especially to see the traveling Space Exhibit. It was nice for a traveling exhibit. Some highlights were (either real or duplicated) the Ham the chimp space couch, the Apollo 9 Command Module, some earl space suits, an actual moon rock, the Mars Rover and a mock up of the moon landing! The permanent exhibits are nice too! The museum goes in chronological order, starting with early flight, WWI, Golden Age of flight, WWII, modern flight and the rotunda. I really like the WWI exhibits which are more rare in museums. The WWII exhibit is partially set up like the deck of an aircraft carrier. New additions include talking animatronics of Charles Lindbergh and Amelia Earhart that explain their exhibits! It’s definitely the best museum in Balboa Park. Highlights include, the only flying replica of the Spirt of St. Louis, a reproduction of a Lockheed Vega used in the film Amelia, many WWI planes and various flight simulators! Definitely worth checking out!

The museum takes you through the history of flight, with a special emphasis on the advancements achieved in southern California. Lots of planes, a good display of artifacts from space travel. All explained very well.
This was the one museum in the area that really captured our infant grandson.

I was impressed with the depth with which much of the information was covered. I also appreciated the memorial to September 11. The museum allows one to go at one's own pace, and has plenty of interest for even non-enthusiasts (like me). I liked the inclusion of the changing roles of women in space exploration, as it's not only a "dead white man's" museum.

This is a place of history and fun. There is so much to see in this museum, more planes than in the Smithsonian museum. It has its own gems and is the house of some of the rare items for the world war artifacts.
There are flight simulations and other activities for kids. It will make a nice family outing packed with history.

Good museum in Balboa Park. We bought the 1 day pass that allowed access to 4 museums or our choice which was a much better deal.
This museum has some great exhibits, and movie you can watch and an area where you can try out some different VR rides and games (at an extra cost).
We spent about 2 hours here and really enjoyed our time.
They also did offer an outdoor eating area, but we did not eat there so not sure what is offered or pricing.
Would certainly recommend coming here for a visit.

We brought our kids here while visiting Balboa Park. I was very impressed. It is a little expensive to enter but...they have some displays I have never seen. They have a section devoted to space exploration with lots of interesting displays. Numerous space suits and lots to see/ read/ and explore.
The aviation section has substantial exhibits. Everything from WW1 (Red Barron Folker Tri plane) to a Blue Angel FA18 Hornet. I saw planes that I have never seen. BF109 Messerschmidts, SpitFire, and even a Mig. Don’t hesitate to drop by this museum if you are interested in aviation. And if your not...you probably will be by the time your done. You will probably need a couple of hours to really enjoy this attraction.

The Museum has a lot of displays, mostly air. The displays begin with the dawn of flight and have numerous early 1900s displays. Then a number of WWII displays. And finally some space information. They had an Apollo 9 space capsule with some explanation of that mission. It was a good depiction of air flight from Wright Brothers onward to today. In addition there were a number of good videos.

My suggestion would be to use the internet, and go to their site. You will receive up-to-date, and current information, including prices & promotions. Prior to my visit, I used the internet and read what special activities were happening on the dates of my visit, and you can find out about parking, eating facilities, and what 's going on in nearby museum buildings as well. Good luck, and have fun.

We're planning a visit to the San Diego Air and Space museum with a couple boys aged 4 and 6. Any and all tips from travelers on what exhibits here will most appeal to this age group. Thanks!

When we were there, there were so many young children there on school field trips. They were absolutely fascinated with all the exhibits, especially the ones pertaining to the astronauts.

Hi, my son has good allergies (eggs, wheat and nuts). Do the restaurants at the resort have gluten free/egg-free/nut-free options?
Thank you.
