Another of Balboa Partk's large attractive buildings that really isn't as big on the inside as it looks. This is a nice museum if somewhat over priced. It has one Egyptian piece, no Greek, and no Roman pieces. It has some Renaissance pieces, and way too many still lives. There was a very interesting collection of German Impressionist which I... Ancient Middle Eastern art and ancient art from other parts of the world. Got old really fast. Where's the 20th & 21st century art?? Where's the US art? Clearly, the city puts its park money into the SD zoo.

The plaza in front of the San Diego Museum of Art (SDMA) has been transformed into a public square. Two corporate donors provided the colorful umbrellas, chairs and tables in a previous parking area. SDMA has added some sculptures to the mix;. On one recent Friday evening, a few food trucks had pulled in, long lines of eaters snaked around... More

The museum has some really superb paintings and they are beautifully displayed. Much of the collection was given by the Putnam family, who were most discerning collectors. Among major works is one of the few paintings in the world proven to be by Giorgione - an exceptional portrait of a man. There is a most beautiful painting by Luini of... More

There are southeast Asian collection of Indian miniature paintings, Buddhist sacred sculptures and Islamic art. On a recent family vacation to San Diego, I slipped away alone for a restorative morning of art! The museum is in a beautiful, elaborate building with a gorgeous foyer, located in lovely Balboa Park. I marveled over their statuary, some beautiful Van Dycks, and Modigliani's Blue Eyed Boy. They had a rotating photography exhibit that was completely arresting and... More

Small, but well-done and well-designed museum. Some very nice European artworks for the special exhibit, including some of Mary Magdalene that I'd not seen before. I went on a Monday, which was not at all crowded, thus a pleasant wandering from room to room. Friendly, helpful staff...wifi in the museum...and their iPhone app is fun to use.

I wasn't expecting this Museum to be so compact. It is only a ground and first floor, but the variety of art styles is good, including Asian, traditional European, and some beaut modern as well. It wasn't all that crowded on the day that my wife, mother-in-law and I attended, so one was able to get a really good look... More
