Any time of year there are a variety of pieces on display. The exhibits usually feature at least one nationally recognized artist, a local artist and a display of international art. The volunteers are very informative and friendly. If you have kids be sure to visit the Art Lab in the basement of the museum. This is a hands on, free, interactive space for kids to learn about art and get creative. This is a must see for any family visiting Topeka.

The Mulvane is small, but always has great shows. They bring in both local and national artists and exhibits. In addition, they offer an "Art Lab" for kids, which is outstanding. They also offer classes for kids and adults.

A lovely little art museum. It's a little small, but a nice stop for a short break. Don't forget to view the art outside.

I am an art lover and an amateur photographer, but this is really a BIG disappointment as an art museum. The collection is extremely limited here. We practically finished this place in 15 minutes. The good thing is the museum is free, and the staff were very friendly. No photography was allowed inside (unless you are an art student on some kind homework assignment). Definitely not worth to come here specifically for this. If you have half an hour to kill, and if you are close by, this might be OK. The art museum at nearby Kansas University (Lawrence) is much better, which is also free.

I travel all over in search of Art o Mats and this was no exception. Not the best looking machine, but full of great art. For the uninitiated, Art O Mats are cigarette machines that have been converted to dispense art the size of a pack of cigarettes for $5 each. You buy tokens in the gift shop. We also enjoyed the exhibit of Edward Burtynsky "The Industrial Sublime". Large scale pictures of industrial locations such as shipyards and factories. Staff was very friendly and the the museum and parking were both free. Even though the space was not large the exhibit was well curated. Would visit again to see another exhibit.

Free admission! This museum not only has exhibits that are interesting for kids and grownups alike, it also trusts you not to touch the art. It's rare to find a museum that doesn't either lock everything up so you can't get near it or watch you as if you were a saboteur! I love that they try to engage the visitors, such as encouraging us to bring our own found photos to post in their lobby during the recent showing of a found photo collection. The docent on the 2nd floor was happy to share interesting tidbits which made our visit more enjoyable. We will be back in the near future to let our kids try out the Art Lab. And I want to buy some vending machine art from the Art-O-Rama for $5!

This is nice museum to visit if you are in need of something to do in Topeka. It's not like the Nelson Atkins (Kansas City) or Denver Art Museum, certainly not, it is more of a mix of more modern, regional art. However, they do have some interesting traveling shows come in. It's a family friendly museum, it's free, doesn't take a lot of time to see it, it sometimes has exhibits geared towards kids and sometimes shows artwork made by local kids. Every couple of months or so, new exhibits are always coming in, so it gives a reason to keep coming back to Topeka. If you are in the area, you probably should check it out.

We come to Topeka about every six weeks to see our granddaughter and always try to have some kind of activity planned.
This time we went to the Mulvane Art Museum. We loved the ArtLab! It has a variety of activities for the whole family, we ranged in age from 6 to 72, and all found things to interest us.
The only thing we had problems with is the lay out of the museum, we came specifically for the art lab, but a map of the museum would have been great as we were unclear exactly where all the exhibits were and there were no directions. What we did see of the art was interesting and next time we come we will ask for a map or something.
I do want to encourage everyone, when you see a sale of school supplies. Please bring crayons, glue sticks, paint brushes, paints etc to Mulvane for the use of the families , also any old magazines , or art books. They are doing a marvelous thing here so donations of cash or supplies are welcome.

We went for a butterfly event and loved it...downstairs! They had wonderful areas for the children to explore, create, and learn. We loved it. On the main floor we enjoyed the different art and simple machines to create the creative art pieces. However, the top floor was more than a disappointment! There was a poster of a naked Playboy layout. It had NOTHING to do with the exhibit. It wasn’t artistic in the least. It was so out of place that it was laughable.
If you have young kids, apparently you have to explore beforehand to make sure they didn’t include PLAYBOY! Ridiculous.
