Neighbourhood: South End
Stroll down the beautiful brownstone lined streets while capturing views of Boston’s tallest buildings from a distance. Some of Boston’s best restaurants are scattered around this neighborhood. There are many gems to be found, from jazz clubs to classy bars and restaurants. It is also home to art galleries, interesting boutiques, artsy stores and SOWA open market during the summer months. The South End is a true find in the city, with a more residential feeling than Back Bay.

    Beautiful Cathedral
This is a huge, high ceiling Cathedral with a beautiful altar and beautiful stained-glass windows throughout the church. In the back is a large pipe organ and a medallion stained-glass window. It is well worth a stop inside, especially if you are in the area. I came for Good Friday Stations of the Cross. They did a live reenactment through the streets of South End. It was quite impressive.

Traditional Latin Mass in lower Cathedral at 10 AM on Sundays
Traditional Latin Mass on Sunday mornings at 10 AM. Confession with Latin absolution. Very enriching homilies from Fr. Taurasi. Communion only on the tongue. A tremendous blessing and gift from God, and my treasure on Earth. Lower Cathedral on the right passed the statue of Our Lady. Gregorian choir and beautiful community. Coffee hour after mass. Very family friendly. I love it all so dearly.

Beautiful yet not over the top
Beautiful but not over the top. The stained glasses are nice. Check out the side chapel to the side. There's a relic of the True Cross. At the back, you'll find a chair that Pope John Paul II used during his visit.

Magnificently beautiful. Obviously recently restored and a grand display of art and history. Allow some time to take in the details of the church. We were shocked that only about 50 people attended early Sunday Mass - such a tragedy.

Put this on your list for a visit, I was here for the Saturday vigil. Unfortunately the church is being renovated so the basement chapel is what is being used until early spring. The building it self is very impressive in size and beauty. I can’t wait to come back and see the completed project.

At the present time the Church is under renovation and has been gutted out but We got a private tour from the Keely Society. Our Family installed the Stained Glass windows in the Church back in the 1870's. Leo who plays the Organ also played the Grand Organ for us. It was our first time visiting the Church and with a personal connection to its construction ,it will be a memory that will last forever

The majestic, historical, and expansive Cathedral of the Holy Cross church is presently being renovated, so entrance to the upper level will be closed until 2018. You can get some insight into those renovations by visiting and going downstairs into the basement where there is Our Lady Chapel (where services will continue until the upper church is re-opened) and some administrative rooms.

The church is the largest in New England, offering Roman Catholic services in English, Spanish, German, and Latin. It opened in 1875, so you can understand why the renovations are crucial. Most recently, there were renovations to the exterior where ages of wear and tear had darkened the exterior materials and caused for some cracks that--lacking repair--could have led to more serious structural problems.

When fully opened, the inside is something to behold. it is about 360 feet in length (that's a football field, and a half!), has ceilings as high as 125 feet, sports massive stained glass windows that provide ample natural lighting, and houses the largest church organ ever built by "the world renowned Hook and Hastings Company."

The church seats about 2,000 parishioners and dwarfs wedding parties numbering in the 100's and 200's.

Though the upper level is closed, the church is worth a visit. Take a few pictures of the exterior, go downstairs, donate, talk to a parishioner, or go to one of the many masses held during the days, and nights.

The church is located across the street from Foodies, a grocery store with a decidedly "local" feel. The Gallows, a trendy "gastro pub," is also across Washington Street, as are two boutique stores, Viola Lovely and Boomerangs.

I visited here for mass on Saturday evening. There is a decent amount of parking on street including meters (a dollar in quarters should be enough).

Sadly the cathedral is in course of renovation so mass was in the Chapel of Our Lady which is underneath the cathedral. The ceiling was quite low, but the chapel is very ornate with great wood carvings on the walls behind the altar and it's quite atmospheric.

From the outside the cathedral looks great -fantastic architecture. Not sure when the works are due to end but you should check before you visit.

Amazing
Windows. Let in so much light. Even though we aren't Christian, the cathedral was a great stop. Trying to imagine building it by hand hundreds of years ago. . . Magnificent.
