This tony neighborhood--one of the two most expensive residential areas in Boston--started as a bay. The bay was filled in during the 19th century to create the area now known by the name Back Bay. The area is known for its Victorian brownstones, the Boston Public Library, shopping, office high rises and upscale hotels.

Back Bay is definitely a must-see neighborhood. Boylston is the backbone of the area and is chock full of stores, restaurants and hotels. However, take time to explore some of the side streets like Newbury which have numerous unique and independent stores and restaurants. You'll also find some great architecture.

Lots to do in the Back Bay and conveniently located and in walking distance to historic sites and upscale shopping. We stayed at a hotel in the Back Bay and walked or easily took the transit.

In choosing our hotel, one of the considerations was the wonderful description given about this area of Boston. We found it to be a beautiful, clean, safe area with shops and restaurants sufficient for our needs and within walking distance for many, but not all, attractions. We still needed to use the hop on/off trolley tour and a taxi to... More

The side streets are alphabetical, Arlington, Berkeley, Clarendon and up to Hereford. The building exteriors cannot be altered without many levels of approval. This is a great residential area interspersed with dining of every kind and shopping galore.

The Back Bay is one of Boston's nicest neighbourhoods. There is a real mix of old & new architecture as well as many shops and restaurants to choose from. I was in town for the final weekend of the baseball season & another plus is the proximity to Fenway park which was a 15 minute walk from my hotel.

Staying in Back Bay

Neighbourhood Profile
Back Bay
Wander around this quintessential neighborhood in the heart of Boston for high-end shops, restaurants, and the feeling of city bustle. Its most identifiable skyscrapers, the Prudential Center and John Hancock Tower, are highlights of the city skyline. Visit Newbury street to explore unique and trendy boutiques – as well as every other kind of store imaginable – all housed in beautiful brownstone buildings. In nice weather, restaurant patio seating is packed with Bostonians and tourists alike soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the food. Commonwealth Ave offers a beautiful stroll down residential tree-lined streets. Keep walking towards the Charles River and enjoy a beautiful view by the water. In warmer months, people run and bike on paths running along the esplanade, and sail and kayak on the Charles River. Boylston street, also full of shops, bars, and restaurants, is the finish line of the Boston Marathon. Head towards Copley Square and check out the Boston Public Library, which is particularly beautiful from the Dartmouth street entrance.
