My wife & I were surprised by the beauty of this church in Asheville. We have traveled the world & have seen many historic & beautiful churches. This church in Asheville was a small but very ornate church & one of the prettiest churches we have seen in the U.S. If you are looking for a small but very beautiful... More

Though not very old by international standards (completed 1909), the Raphael Guastavino-designed Basilica of Saint Lawrence is a National Register gem and a key component of the Downtown Asheville Historic District. I’m not a big fan of Spanish Renaissance architecture, but I’ve seen this building many times and have come to appreciate its distinctive features. It is not so much... More

I walked into the basilica while on the Urban Trail. It is truly a work of art. Worth stopping in to admire. Unfortunately I had not read much in advance about it or the Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino who came to Asheville to work on the Biltmore and stayed. He is buried in the basilica in an above ground tomb.... More

Pretty nice place to stop and see if you are in that part of town. We were able to walk in and look around. Nicely decorated for Christmas.

Very interesting structure by early 20th century Spanish architect who is buried in the basilica (only above ground burial in Asheville). Wonderful tile work and mosaics as well.

Well worth the walk. Completed in 1909 by Spanish architect Rafael Guastavino who also contributed to a number of well know structures: Ceiling of the Ellis Island Great Hall Boston Public Library; Grand Central Terminal (NYC) Grant's Tomb, Carnegie Hall, and many others.

I am visiting my son and wanted to attend Christmas mass so I googled closest Catholic Church and the basilica of st Lawrence showed. What an uplifting experience- a sung mass, amazing architecture and a history lesson all rolled into one. They have a free brochure explaining the background. Very touching spiritual encounter.

Guastavino in late 1800 and early 1900 is credited for the revival of an ancient tile and mortar building system that had been used in Catalonia and other parts of Spain for centuries This method of building uses layers of thin tile bedded in layers of mortar to create curved horizontal surfaces. Floors roofs,, ceilings and stairs can all be... More
