More
Bandelier National Monument is 50 square miles of the Pajarito Plateau, on the slopes of the Jemez Volcanic field in the Jemez Mountains. Over 70% of the Monument is Wilderness, with over 1 mile elevation change, from about 5000' along the Rio Grande to over 10,000' at the rim of the Valles Caldera, providing for a wide range of life zones and wildlife habitat. There are only 3 miles of road, but over 70 miles of hiking trails. The Monument, founded in 1916, protects Ancestral Pueblo archeological sites, a beautiful landscape, and the country's largest Civilian Conservation Corps National Landmark District.

A really nice place to visit. Had to park a the visitors center and then bus into the park, unless you were handicapped, but overall a nice bus ride into the park, about 10-15 minutes. Once in the park, a park ranger greeted you and...More

The Cliff dwellings were fun to explore. The paths were easy to walk and we ventured on the more difficult paths up the mountain to see the view of the vistas. It was fun experiencing how Native Americans lived hundreds of years before us. The...More

This is a park where you can feel what it might have been like to live over 400 years ago as the native people did. There is a good self guided walk through the area where native people lived both on the valley floor and...More

Great cliff dwellings. Super pathways between dwellings. Climb ladders and go inside or just hike along a long cliff full of cliff dwellings. Great place worth the journey from Albuquerque or Santa Fe for the day.

We visited Bandelier National Monument during our Spring Break vacation this year. During our visit, the weather changed from snow to rain and then to a beautiful afternoon. The sites are both educational and interesting.

The Main Trail has the most dwellings but the Alcove House has a 140 foot climb up a ladder. All are fascinating and worth a good look! Enjoy!!
