The Potomac Heritage Trail is one of the advantages of living on the Virginia side of the Potomac River. (There are advantages of living on the Maryland/DC side, too!) Easy to access the trail north of Chain Bridge offers beautiful views of the river and opposite shore. It is easy to follow in parts, but mostly you'll be on a... More

This is an interesting trail and you certainly don't have to do all 10 miles to enjoy it. It follows the Potomac River for a while then climbs a few bluffs. You then find yourself walking along the George Washington Memorial Parkway then back into the woods for a bit. It takes you under major roadways, along the water and... More

We have seen the prettier sections, but we hiked on a really primitive part of the trail to the East of Theodore Roosevelt Island. Dirt tracks next to the river and picnics on rocks in the river. We found it through Windy Run Park - Interesting hike.

I love this walk, there are some trickling small waterfalls and small cliffs and flat trails. I used to take my dog walking here and he was able to get a lap of water when thirsty. Young kids might like to run through the hills here, go over small streams and walk in the flats.

I love the Potomac Heritage trail, particularly when I can find a time to run on it when its nearly empty. Especially in cold weather or the heat of the summer you can get out on the trail and imagine that you are completely on your own nowhere near DC, but instead somewhere in the countryside.

Tried this trail as part of a 20-mile training run in the early autumn. After an excellent 10 miles of C&O Canal towpath and crossing the Key Bridge to Theodore Roosevelt Island, I thought I'd take this trail back on the VA side of the Potomac a few miles at least to Chain Bridge. The trail is a narrow forest... More

Training for longer hikes and bigger outings, going from the TR Island parking lot to the Cabin John Bridge and back, with pack, is a good 20 mile RT day. Terrain is largely flat, just a bit of topography, so this is an excellent training hike.
