We had an hour before an activity and Scenic byway 279 was a great option. You pass by Wall Street where people are climbing. Then you come across petroglyphs which are quite impressive. Further up the byway you can turn off for a short hike...More

This site is on the road, so very easy to access. Nice to see history that hasn't been destroyed by man.

This is a very short drive from town and close to the Arches National Park too. I was very impressed with the clarity of the drawings - perhaps it is because they are high enough off the road that people can't touch them or mess...More

If you're interested in petroglyphs, this is a wonderful site. Get out of your car and walk along the road by the sign. Look carefully, all of a sudden you'll see petroglyphs everywhere, communicating from the ancient past. Magical.

If it was not for our tour guide (Phil from Nactev) I would have missed these. He even told us his interpretation of them. A must see.

There were several places on this road with good petroglyphs. One site is well marked with a sign. The sites are not all marked in hopes of keeping people from vandalizing the ones within easy reach. It's very important if you find any of these...More

It is amazing to see the beautiful petroglyphs along this road. We stopped and hike to see the dinosaur footprints and more petroglyphs at Poison Spider Trail. Worth your time to go see this.

It takes about 30 minutes each way to get to Newspaper Rock but this interesting petroglyph is worth the detour to see six-toed footprints, elk and human depictions.

This was great to see. Somethings are just worth in person than from a picture. What I hated was the idiots who defaced an ancient artifact. Unfortunately, that is difficult to control. A great byway to travel.

That's the one - as you leave Moab heading towards Arches - 279 is on the left. It follows the Colorado River on the left (nice views) and it is a cliff on the right. You will go by cliff climbers first and then there will... More
