The Old Bayfield County Courthouse is quite different now-a-days. When we entered it, it wasn’t a courthouse any longer, no prisons were located here any longer. It is now a Visitor Center for the National Parks. There was information about the light keepers that was quite interesting and many local books were on sale. However, the room where they show... I am not sure why this Trip Advisor location is called the Old County Courthouse, perhaps for historical reasons. When we visited in August 2016, it is clearly the Apostle Islands Visitor Center for the National Parks. We stopped here in Bayfield before taking the ferry to Madeline Island. We watched a video about the Apostle Islands here and purchased... More

Good video, nice display and exhibits. Grand daughter is Junior Park Ranger and earned another badge by completing a workbook from that office. The Rangers do a swearing in ceremony that is awesome.

It is a great stop for info on the national parks, and apostle islands. They have a nice exhibit, and free! They are very helpful! Bayfield heritage tours stops at the old Court house/jail. It is a must stop inBayfield, and see the Rittenhouse Inn, and the new restaurant in town, the broad street bistro! Great American/Turkish/Greek delights. Gluten free... More

Staffed by national park ranger. Maps, info about Apostle Islands. Good 20 minute video with details about many of the major islands, excellent place to visit before you boat (or walk in winter.) Washington Ave between 4th & 5th. Kids can get a stamp for their national parks passport

This is a beautiful old building that now houses a (free) National Park Service information office about the Apostle Islands. They have a helpful short movie and a number of displays about various aspects of the Islands, especially lighthouses. Definitely worth 30-45 minutes. Just a few blocks from downtown - but it's not on either of the main streets. So... More

We recently purchased property in Bayfield and need a plat map, so we had to visit the court house for that and other information. I don;t know what I expected, but it's just beautiful. Built in 1895 of local brownstone, with high ceilings, staircases, and a skylight on the top floor. And it's still used as county offices, so you... More

You can't miss the opportunity to visit this place when you are in Bayfield. Old crackling wood floors, cool art, tee-shirts, hats and tons of information about the Islands. You must see the historical Apostle Island Movie; it is fantastic! The Rangers are so helpful and kind.

We almost drove by this big brownstone. When you see it, you'll wonder how we didn't see it! It's a big, old structure built in the days when logging was king. The Park Service has a great little museum inside, that highlights the Lighthouse keepers (the Michigan Lighthouse Lamp is on display). Be sure to ask a ranger to start... More
