Neighbourhood: Chinatown
As the oldest in North America, San Francisco's Chinatown is an exotic experience. A unique neighbourhood decorated with colourful shops, historic streetlights, hanging lanterns, and pagoda roofs awaits behind the stone-carved dragon gates. Feast on dim sum at the tea houses, or meet the locals who gather at historic Portsmouth Square to play chess or practice Tai Chi. Fish markets, produce stands, tourist shops, jewelry stores, fortune tellers, temples and restaurants come together to create a world unto itself in this historic neighbourhood.

Lovely Park Across from Historic Cathedral
In July, I stumbled on Old St Mary’s Cathedral on California St, and while photographing it from the exterior, encountered St Mary’s Park, just across the street.
I had walked down California St, from Chinatown, and discovered the Cathedral, and from it, discovered St Mary’s Park
First, it was a great vantage point, to study the structure of the Cathedral, but it was also a tranquil little park, right in the middle of Chinatown.
The park has some nice grassy areas, and quite a few benches, plus a small playground for youngsters. I noticed a public bathroom, in an antique structure, on the western edge of the park, so a convenience.
Besides the views of the Cathedral, and some of the nearby buildings, both in Chinatown and the Financial District, St Mary’s Park offers a respite from life - nice and quiet, and lovely to behold.

This is a welcome park in the middle of Chinatown and the Financial District. So it is much loved and much used by the folks in this crowded part of town. Sometimes in the shadows of the high rise buildings all around.

I was walking around Chinatown and stopped in St. Mary's Square to check out the sculptures. Peaceful and clean, it is a nice place to take a break and relax.

I enjoy visiting this little park, which has the perfect amount of shady and sunny benches, just one block off the bustling Grant street in Chinatown. Here, you can listen to the bells of Old St. Mary's Church (which survived the 1906 earthquake), you can watch children shrieking with delight on the play structures and little toy train. And you'll find a great mixture of people since you're on the border of Chinatown and the Financial District.

St. Mary’s Square is a nice park across the street and down the alley from the Old St. Mary’s Church. This small peaceful park has some green space, benches and several games/toys and play area for children. There is a monument in appreciation of the Chinese assistance to American soldiers and another statue at the opposite side of the park.

Do not leave any valuables in car. This is not a secure car park. We parked our car here and on our return someone broke into our car and took important documents

This is a nice park downtown and next to Chinatown. We passed by here on our way to lunch and I noted that there were quite a few people here on a sunny day. Needed green space in a very crowded part of town.

During our walk to China town, we took a quick stop at St Mary’s Square. It is a calm and pleasant place in the sea of activity that is China town

The statue of Sun Yat-Sen is here, he was the leader of the rebellion that ended the Qing Dynasty and was the founder of the Republic of China.
There benches and a small playground. It's a nice break from the main street of Chinatown.
