Peter & Paul church is the center of North Beach and my own Church, but this weekend each year it is also at the heart of the Columbus day weekend street fair. Not to be missed, if you wish to see the old small town side of San francisco with all the true Italian color and pride in full swing. Spend the day just taking in the sounds and you will have a short trip to Italy..Magnifica

The Church of Saint Peter and Paul is Joe DiMaggio's church. You will remember a photo of Joe and Marilyn Monroe on the steps (although, as a divorced woman, they were not married in the church). This stately beauty has arched vault ceilings and many statues of saints. Light a candle for your loved ones who passed ($5) and contemplate the awesome beauty of this church!

This church is located in North Beach at Washington Square, a popular meeting place in the neighborhood & visitors alike. It's adorned in marble, gilding, carved wood, many statues lining the walls, painted ceiling with gold leaf. This is the place where Joe diMaggio married his first wife (before Marilyn Monroe) and where his funeral mass was celebrated. Beautiful exterior and interior architecture, and a beautiful photo op.

After walking through the Chinese and Italian neighborhoods, this was a pleasant stop for solitude. Beautiful architecture providing a spiritual atmosphere. Many fine details of the Catholic religion to examine and discover. The pipe organ would have provided musical enjoyment; too bad it isn't played often. A passerby told of the "pose" by Marilyn and Joe on the front steps to "sanctify" their marriage. Probably many more secular stories from here, but even more celebrating the spirituality of the faith. Another refreshing stop inside a busy city!

Right on the north perimeter of Washington Square is the beautiful SS Peter and Paul Church. Worth the detour to check out if you are in North Beach!

With a grand rose window, tremendous twin spires and gleaming in the sunshine it was thrilling to visit this landmark church. It really has a gorgeous facade.
The beauty continues within. An awe inspiring vision is to be seen along the nave, culminating in the wonderful high altar area. A figure of Christ in the Pantocrator style is backed by radiant golden light within a domed segment.
The ceiling is beautifully decorative. Statuary abounds including a poignant Pieta and one depicting a woman teaching a young child.
Looking to the rear, a magnificent organ is in its elevated position. We mused on the sonorous music that must be produced with the fine acoustics.

Worth a visit if you're in Little Italy, purely because of the oddity of its address.
I found out that Joe Dimaggio and Marilyn Monroe had their wedding photos taken on the steps of this church (although they didn't get married there).

Walking through San Francisco’s “Little Italy” area, I saw twin steeples on the other side of Washington Square, a triangular pocket park at Union and Columbus streets. When I approached the magnificent structure, I learned the name—presumably the purpose of the twin spires. There was a small service when I arrived, so I was able to experience the interior beauty from the vestibule. I later learned that there are tours, but my time was limited. Highly recommended!

Hi Nancy K, I don't have too much to add as you got some good info from aggie1202. She is right they do not have their own lot. And they are street meters as well as other sites similar to spothero to reserve - parkwhiz is another. Need a bit more info to assist you further - what time of year are you going and like aggie says what day and time. Additionally how long and do you (or anyone in your party) have a problem walking - is there something too far? Where are you staying? in the city itself or ? Do you need your car w/ you? can you take public transportation (which gets off very close). If you would like to answer these, I can perhaps give you some other thoughts. Hope this helps, k
