It was fascinating watching how they turn the trolleys around manually. Very busy but managed to get on the 2nd one and enjoyable ride up the hills! Very efficient service and staff helpful and friendly.

We spent about one hour hanging out around the cable cars and really enjoyed the uniqueness of the system. The area also has a few street performers.

The cable car turnaround at Powell and Market is great to watch. Its just a few blocks downhill from Union Square. The reason for this is that cable cars can't go in reverse, so they are turned around on a circular rotating platform. We tried...More

.a closeup view of the cable cars if you don't have the time to take a ride. An easy walk from Fisherman's Wharf.

I love the cable cars - a true national treasure! This particular turn-around (the other two are near Fisherman's Wharf) is right downtown at Market and Powell. It's three blocks from Union Square, close to two theaters (the Westfield Century Cinema and Metreon), and surrounded...More

Probably one of the busiest tourist areas in town - but you have to see it in person. The line will be long if you want to catch a cable car, but you can always stay back and watch the operators manually turn around a...More

Hang off the side, watch the instructors ways of manouvering the car. Steep roads of wind blowing in your hair experience. You have to do it at least once.

Avoid the queues by walking a few stops up the hill. Try to be near the driver to see how the mechanism is operated. Not cheap $7 each; but fun; also makes you appreciate the hills.

Like going back in time watching the turntable turn the old streetcar, by using manual power. Not sure whether they stall on purpose to keep a schedule but takes longer than it looks like it should.

This is just a fun part of the "stuff" that is unique to San Francisco. At the other end of the Powell-Hyde line, there's another turnaround point to visit.

Hmmm - we had purchased the San Fran "City Pass" that included unlimited riding on cable cars & the Muni Buses. It's a lot cheaper if you're going to be in town for 3-7 days! To just ride it one time, it's $7 a person per... More
