I enjoy these "urban hikes", but our pre-teens could not understand why we were climbing up just to climb up. Took bus to about 3 blocks away on west side, then a different bus about 2 blocks NE to travel back (hiking up to Grand View Park in between, no reason not to hit this up while here). Lovely piece of art. One "downside" is that it is far removed from many other sites and activities - but the flip side of that is that there can be less crowds and gives a chance for some downtime. Good view of the Pacific and west side of SF, even better when you keep climbing to the park.

The steps are steep but lovely. The wonderful thing is that as you climb the steps, higher portions of the mosaic come into focus, and each section is a new treat. A distant picture just can't do the artwork justice.
At the top, turn around and look down to a gorgeous urban view over the bay. Then proceed across the street to your right and up the stairs (not nearly so impressive, just stairs) to Grandview Park.

As others have said, there's not really anything to do here other than walk the steps and admire the artwork of the tile mosaics, but it's totally free, and they ARE very pretty. Make sure you go up to the top for great city views.
Note: I actually visited these in August, 2018, but it doesn't let you choose the date that far back. Also, I visited with my kids who are not teens, but the only selections for family are with young children or teens.

The 16th Avenue Tiled Steps project has been a neighborhood collaboration to create a sea to stars themed mosaic flowing up a 163-step stairway located in San Francisco's Golden Gate Heights Neighborhood. It offers a unique artistic perspective. It is one of the several mosaic steps in SF. You can have great views from atop. It's an easy climb for healthy people of all ages. Best time to visit is on a weekday between 10am-4pm to avoid crowds. You can continue from atop to grand view park, another 140+ steps for even better views.

Five stars for what you'd expect - it's a lovely little staircase! Climb it then climb a few more stairs into the park for a tiny circle walk for pano views of the city. Wonderful. Afterward, we walked down to the hidden garden stairs!

I have kids of all ages ranging from 3 to 21 and they all enjoyed this stop on our family tour. They enjoyed taking photos on the stairs and said it was a great stop. Parking is not super easy as many streets near there say no parking, but we found a spot close non the less. If you enjoy art and a good workout it's a fabulous stop.

My family went to check out the beautiful staircase, and we were not disappointed! The work that went into making this, we say thank you to those that maintain it and the garden around it! The whole experience was lovely, looking at the staircase, looking from the staircase out over the city to the ocean and enjoying the gardens!

It is easily accessible from the Golden Gate Bridge by bus.
(Highly recommended: an American SIM card with unlimited data and then Google Maps, you can organize walking tours and public transport.)
The steps 170 steps, beautifully decorated and beautiful garden on the side.
But then you can climb another 170 steps and at the very top you have a full view of the surrounding area.

Was difficult to find but so worth the time. The beautiful tiled steps are located in the middle of a neighborhood. The gardens along side the steps are well maintained and gorgeous. At the top of the staircase is a great view of SF and the ocean. We had no difficulty finding a parking spot but I imagine it might be hard at times. Was the highlight of my trip to SF

Pretty place to visit and enjoy the view. Beautiful mosaic stairs surrounded by wonderful plants . No restrooms around and lots of signs to be careful with valuable things left in the car. Recommend it.

Are there restaurants where older people can wait while their children are navigating the stairs?
Written 1 August 2016
This is strictly a residential neighborhood. The nearest restaurant is 3 blocks down the hill to the left.
You can enjoy the plants while the kids play and keep an eye on your vehicle.

Tiled Steps?
Written 19 July 2015
It's better to take public transport as we are having a HUGE problem with car break ins. You cannot leave anything in a car or in the trunk! It will be gone when you return, as thieves watch you leave. Someone will have to stay and watch the car, especially rental cars, which have stickers on window, and out of state license plates.
