Great building

Not as impressive as the OLD library, but very nicely done. A good place to unwind and relax. Clean bathrooms and e decent cafe, too.

While fairly well appointed with books, services and in a nice architected building, it is unfortunate that San Francisco's abundance in homelessness affects this location. In someways it makes a contrasting statement as a slice of life in this city.

SF's main library has amazing historical SF photos & archives. It;s a great place to dig-in during inclement weather, or to catch one of the eclectic & wonderful presentations in its auditorium space.

Great collection and an excellent reading room with easy chairs if you know where to go. Closed on Mondays.

This library is huge and interesting. A LGBT center on the 3rd floor, children on the 2nd floor, magazines on 5 and exhibits on 6. There is security there because a lot of homeless come in but generally harmless. Cafe on lower level and different programs and speakers. Free movie every Thursday at noon. If you are traveling it is... More

When other cities were closing and disinvesting in their libraries, San Francisco built a new one. The picture here is not accurate; it's a picture of the Asian Arts Museum which used to be the library. The new library is close by and well-used by everyone. Unfortunately it can at times seem like a homeless shelter, but nevertheless is a... More

At turns the Main Library is a tribute to learning, a neighborhood bookstore, a microcosm of the City's social services at work, and one of the best places to read and hang out. Be sure to look at the many exhibits around the huge building, especially the James Hormel (yes, the meat people) LGBT Center and the Early California collection... More

The SF Public Library Main Branch is a great public service and destination for voracious readers and researchers of San Francisco history. The building itself was built after the Loma Prieta Earthquake in the late 80s destroyed the historic building. The design pays homage to the old design while also referencing the surrounding government buildings. The children's section is extensive,... More

Everything a world class Library has to offer. Unfortunately you have to share the tables with the less fortunate who need to use the facilities for a shower. Bathrooms really messy due to individuals trying their best to keep clean after nights of living on the street. Other than that, If you don't mind the stench of your neighbor sleeping... More

I am always amazed at the range of programming provided by the SF library, at the Main and in the branches. From author lectures to book clubs to cooking classes to art shows, there's something for everyone. The even have a culinary education cart the travels to their neighbor, the Civic Center farmers' market, teaching kids and adults about the... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
