Awesome steps

Had a great time exploring a side of San Fran I didn't think I'd get to see. Very well maintained. Must go.

We actually went up Filbert Steps and down Greenwich Steps. Great excercise to get to Coit Tower. Beautiful gardens and cn get great photos of the bay, Treasure Island and Bay Bridge. Be prepared for expensive meter parking $3.00 an hour, meters do take cards

These are not the same. Check the angle of the sun and effectiveness of your camera to choose the best climb. Your success at capturing the scenery will depend on which steps you choose.

The hills are so steep around San Francisco, I was delighted to see steps up the hill instead of an incline! These are a little bit hidden, but worth looking for them.

Initially we were looking for the Filbert St. steps but got a little lost. We were walking along the Embarcadero following Google maps but the map didn't look right to me based on my research. It looked like we were going way out of the way so we decided to take the Greenwich steps instead. It is a great way... More

We found these steps accidentally while walking to the hotel. We climbed up to reach coit tower. Peaceful area and good for some hikers for a good workout

This was such a beautiful walk up telegraph hill. It was so lush and the wild parrots were overhead in the trees. It was very strenuous but well worth it. Take your time and enjoy the serenity in the midst of the big city.

Definitely recommend going up one and down the other (Filbert Stairs) to Telegraph Hill; I would say up Greenwich and down Filbert personally;) Start off at Sansome St and start heading up; there are numerous wonderful views of both the city and surrounding bay, along with several interesting houses along the path.

It's great to get good exercise, breathe fresh air, see magnificent houses, possibly see parrots, get amazing views, move to another part of the city, have fun, take great photos, and do it all for free.

My mother and I walked up the Greenwich Steps from The Embarcadero to the top of Telegraph Hill on the morning of August 1st, after we had visited the Ferry Plaza Farmer’s Market. The Greenwich Steps are a set of stairs that have been built along an almost completely vertical hillside, connecting The Embarcadero to Telegraph Hill, as they wind... More

Staying in North Beach / Telegraph Hill

Neighbourhood Profile
North Beach / Telegraph Hill
The aroma of freshly roasted coffee beans, the sounds of opera, and the sights of the romantic Italian ristorante come together to create the charming neighbourhood of North Beach, once the stomping grounds for the Beatnik Generation. Although parts of North Beach are known for nightlife that’s not always suitable for younger visitors, few neighbourhoods in the city exude as much European charm and style. Peruse a bookstore for the literature of Kerouac, Ferlinghetti and Ginsberg, grab some gelato and head to Washington Square for a perfect afternoon of people watching. Just east of North Beach, the hills and staircases of Telegraph Hill are a unique delight. At its peak, the art deco Coit Tower provides sweeping panoramic views of the bay and city. The beautifully landscaped Filbert Street Steps, a street too steep for a roadway, rewards those willing to hike uphill. Keep your ears open and you might even hear the squawk of the wild parrots who call this neighbourhood home.
