We have been thrilling audiences in San Francisco since 1923. We are known for commissioning numerous world premieres, training some of opera's greatest young artists and being one of the world's leading opera companies. Come visit us during our fall season (September - early December) or our summer season (late May - early July) and enjoy an incredible night out.

The War Memorial Opera house is an architectural treasure in San Francisco which gives much pleasure to children and adults alike. We have taken students here for operas and ballets, our children grew up attending the wonderful performances, and we look forward to many more years of excellent experiences. You can't say that all of the operas are to our... More

If you get a chance to see an opera at San Francisco's Opera House, go. Don't think about the price. If you can get tickets, the building itself is amazing, and the SF opera company is among the best. If anything, just go for the spectacle. You'll be glad you did.

As with any opera company there are highs and lows, but SF Opera hits the highs far more often than it produces a miss. Excellent company, and attracts fantastic visiting artists. Last minute tickets are usually available (I turn in my fantastic seats from time to time if I am out of town, the last minute seats are often excellent).

If you're stopping through SF during opera season, go see an opera. Just do it. It's a world-class company in the gorgeous War Memorial opera house. You can also buy a standing-room ticket for $20, then arrive an hour before performance time, and get a nice leaning-on-a-wall/rail spot in the orchestra level for the show. Cheap, good, amazing singer-actors. Go!

we experienced 3 operas in the most beautiful theatre . one arrives and amid all the marble foyers it is truly a greta start to a most enjoyable evening. Even in the top balcony they have large screens that show close up of the stage and orchestra so even if you can only afford the cheap seats , you will... More

The summer performances have been great value with wonderful voices and exciting visual productions. Both Mary Magdalene and Tales of Hoffman were entrancing. The opera house is a classic, beautiful setting. The only drawback is the uncomfortable seats, even in orchestra; they must have been made for much smaller people.

It is not one of San Francisco's most spectacular attractions, but for the Opera lover, it is more than adequate. Given the highly cultured nature of the city, it attracts interesting operas including Aida featuring set designs by Zandra Rhodes.

This is the organization that made a real opera fan out of me years ago. It is so magnificent. What an institution. There is nothing I don't like about it... except I can't take it home. Oh wait... you can. Fantastic recordings are available.

For visitors and locals alike, I recommend a visit to the Opera House. Not only are there fall and summer opera seasons, but there is a winter/spring ballet season, with an interesting, occasional one night event that is always interesting. Both the opera orchestra and the ballet orchestra are world class and a fine compliment to the beautiful works on... More

Staying in Civic Center

Neighbourhood Profile
Civic Center
Civic Center is the seat of power for all things government and performance-related in the city. Although its streets are best walked during daytime, numerous cultural gems are within close proximity to one another. The symphony, opera, ballet, and jazz center offer year round entertainment within the shadow of the city’s Beaux-Arts crown jewel: the gold tipped dome of City Hall.
