Well --- I wanted to see the Defenestration Building one last time before it was torn down this fall (2014); total waste of time. First of all, I walked done 6th street --- big mistake; probably one of the worst blocks (Market to Mission on 6th street) in the country --- bums, rapists, drugs, urine, porn, pawn shops, prostitutes (and... The long-abandoned Hugo Hotel in San Francisco is home to this extraordinary art project by Brian Goggin. Installed in 1997, it was originally intended to be there about 6 months. Called "Defenestration" (brilliant naming - it means "throwing someone or something out of a window"), it's comprised of 46 items of furniture in various stages of exiting the premises. After... I've always loved this bit of whimsey on the gritty corner of 6th and Harrison. Normally inanimate objets captured in the act of defenestration. Many may contemplate the act, but only the truly strong clocks, sofas, tvs and chairs attempt it.

Staying in SoMa

Neighbourhood Profile
SoMa
South of Market (SoMa), has an urban and sophisticated vibe, but you're more likely to find big nightclubs and lots of industrial loft residences than you are to find boutique shopping. Although it’s the epicenter for tech startups in the city, visitors will be able to do more than just business - museums, top quality restaurants, and the San Francisco Giants now call this neighbourhood home. Most of its freeway-sized streets may not capture the same character as other neighbourhoods in the city, but pockets of charm, like South Park, can still be found throughout its side streets.
