- john cNashville, Tennessee81 contributionsWorth the stopStopped here on our way from Louisville to Nashville. Always the history buff we decided to take a look at Lincoln’s birthplace. It is further off the I-65 than i thought but the route is well marked … maybe 20 minutes. A very quiet park but well staffed in the visitor’s center. There was an interesting movie that runs continuously. It gave a lot of background information about Lincoln, his family and how they got to this part of Kentucky. There are exhibits in the visitor’s center that had several replicas of how families like the Lincolns lived in the wilderness. The visitor’s center is well worth the stop. The grounds are very nice with trails that circle around it. The high point of the park is the Lincoln Memorial that sits majestically on top of a hill. There are a lot of steps leading up to it but the steps are broken up and there are benches along the way. I don’t know if any of the trails would get you up to the Memorial. Inside the Memorial is the log cabin that Abraham Lincoln lived in as a young child. Not sure if it is a replica or not. The whole layout is peaceful and majestic. The movie references the farm the Lincoln and his family had to move to. It is only about 15 miles away through Hodgenville. We drove over there but there is not much to see. We were there on a weekday and the visitor’s center was closed (only open on weekends). There wasn’t anything to see. This part you can skip. Glad we made the stop.Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 October 2023
- pat cPalm Coast, Florida126 contributionsLincoln birthplaceA fine stop to view log cabin, birthplace of our 16 th President. Park Ranger was very good about answering all my questions, as well as pointing out a lot of little know facts. The main building has an excellent educational video, as well as scheduled Park Ranger led tours. It is worth an hour and half to view this monument and learn some history. A big thanks to the wonderful park rangers!!!Visited October 2023Travelled with familyWritten 20 October 2023
- Heather JohnsonSterling, Illinois51 contributionsLearn About Abe Lincoln's Humble BeginningsWhen in the area, you would be remiss to not stop and visit this amazing historic park. The humble beginnings of our nation's 16th president are evident here, as visitors have an opportunity to meander the grounds where Abraham Lincoln once read, wrote, daydreamed, and worked. Be sure to stop by his boyhood home at Knob Creek as well, since it is a short drive away!Visited July 2023Travelled with familyWritten 7 March 2024
- Thallulah112868 contributionsGreat place to see for historyAbraham lincoln is my favorite president, and this was the best tribute I've seen to him besides the Lincoln Memorial. To be in the place he was born was special. Park is very well maintained and well built.Enjoyed family history and artifacts they have there.Visited April 2024Travelled with friendsWritten 15 April 2024
- Harley HedgehogSan Francisco Bay Area, California11 contributionsGo inside the memorial to see the cabinThis place is a small historical park whose claim to fame is the first memorial building built to honor Abraham Lincoln. Inside the memorial is a symbolic cabin. Yes, inside. The park offers guided ranger tours and you can take advantage of various walking tours. Unfortunately, there was inclement weather and we decided against the various walking paths. If you’re near this park during your travels, you should take a stop to at least see the memorial and the cabin. The rangers provide a nice summary of Lincoln’s boyhood while growing up. At the time of our visit, there were two items that caught my eye in the visitor center: a bust of Lincoln’s head and a Penny Portrait of Lincoln. It was a bit difficult for me to see Lincoln’s head in the Penny Portrait but when you take a picture of the portrait, it’s readily seen. Maybe I just don’t have a vivid enough imagination or I have worse eyesight than I thought?Visited June 2024Travelled with familyWritten 14 June 2024
- Ron MHope Mills, North Carolina11 contributionsExcellent learning tripI must say, the Lincoln Birthplace Historical park was an incredible, eye opening experience. The tour guide was excellent and clearly knew the history of the Lincoln family MUCH better than I did. I definitely recommend thet you visit both the Lincoln birthplace and the Abraham Lincoln Boyhood Home at Knob Creek. They are a few mile apart, but BOTH will certainly show you the life he lived and how that life created the man who served this country so well.Visited June 2024Travelled soloWritten 22 June 2024
- BuffySmithPlatte City, Missouri43 contributionsGreat VisitWe really enjoyed this. There is not only history, but also beautiful scenery. It’s short and sweet if you don’t have a ton of time. You can spend more though if needed. They have a volunteer working there who is excellent. She really worked hard to make the experience great for children and families.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 11 August 2024
- Peter C80 contributionsWorth the visit if in the area.Well worth visiting if you are in the area of Hodgenville KY on into the history of the 16th President, Abraham Lincoln. There is no fee to enter the park and parking is plentiful and free also. The Federal employees (NPS) that run this place are very nice and can provide you answers to any of your questions. The Lincoln Memorial is very well kept and beautiful. Inside the Memorial is a replica log cabin that Lincoln and his family lived in. Before you walk the 56 steps of the Memorial, one step for each year Lincoln was alive, to the left of the Memorial you can walk down the steps and see the Sinking spring. You can also walk around the Memorial area and read the many historical signs that talks about the area.Visited August 2024Travelled with familyWritten 13 August 2024

We live only a few hours from DC and have visited the museums and memorials there several times. On this trip we decided to visit the first Lincoln memorial. The building that houses the symbolic birth cabin looks like the architecture of ancient Greece or Rome with all the pillars. There is so much symbolism--56 steps (one for every year of his life) and 16 windows for the 16th president. And the humble one room log cabin replica of the president's birthplace housed inside. Well worth a visit. There is also a good visitor center with displays and a video and clean restrooms.

Stopped here on our way back from Mammoth Cave to Bardstown. Only takes an hour to see and you can learn a lot about Abraham Lincoln’s childhood. Most people associate Illinois with Lincoln but Abraham Lincoln was born in Kentucky and also lived in Indiana before ending up in Illinois.
Definitely recommend going into the visitors center and seeing the fourteen minute film. They also have a Lincoln family bible and a piece of furniture made by Abraham Lincoln’s father on display.
There is an impressive monument built around a log cabin that may or may not be Lincoln birth cabin. Even if it is not Lincoln’s, it is still an actual log cabin from the early 1800’s. What is even more interesting to me is to think how a family lived together in about 200 square feet of space. The monument interior is currently open but has capacity limitations due to Covid.
Lincoln’s father lost this piece of land in a dispute when Lincoln was three. His family moved nine miles down the road to a location called Knob Creek, which can also be visited, but it is currently under renovation until the fall of 21. No admission charge for the monument.

We took our 9 year old grandson and it was a beautiful park. We went in building that had some stuff and watch a movie about Lincoln's life. They have a nice little gift shop.We then walked to the memorial with was nice. If you are traveling a good distance I would also see the Lincoln Museum also in Hodgenville to make it worth the drive.

Visiting several National Parks throughout Tennessee and Kentucky, Kids doing the passport stamps and jr ranger books. Here we had to wait outside, still following covid guidlines - only a few into the visitor center at a time. Gal outside at a table stamped their books to reduce touching the stamp. It was very hot the day we went. Walked the boardwalk sidewalk through the shade up and around to the memorial. Inside was replica of a cabin and the A/C was on so it felt good to step inside. It was also cool by the spring. Kids climbed the steps just to see if the posted # was right. Neither got the same as the other or the posted # Too hot and wore out to retry. Worth a stop. Its history. Something to think about that Lincoln was once walking that area too.

A federal state park facility, it recognizes the fact that Lincoln was born in a small backwater plot of land in Hodgenville, KY. There is a nice museum and the first Lincoln memorial. While the cabin contained in the memorial is not original, it is a fair representation. Note that during the pandemic, you can’t actually walk around the inside of the memorial. There are other trails in the park, where you can walk around and burn off breakfast. Recommended

The movie was a nice way to start the visit. They limit the number of people inside for our protection from the virus spread. The grounds are very well kept up and a pleasure to walk, The only downside was the cabin is not the real one but a replica, but we understand that.

Illinois may call itself the Land of Lincoln, but his birthplace was near Hodgenville KY. The memorial built here predates the Lincoln Memorial in DC by 11 years. Inside of it is a cabin similar to the one in which Lincoln spent the first few years of this life.
The brief film in the visitors center contained information about Lincoln that I was surprised to learn. I highly recommend visiting if you're a Lincoln fan, but if you're not, you'll still enjoy the lovely surroundings.

I traveled here with my wife and sister. For me, it was a must see. For them, it was not. However, after visiting we were all very happy we did. There is a beautiful memorial which was finished before the memorial in DC. The grounds are very nice and there is a path through quiet, peaceful Kentucky woods to the top of the memorial on each side (to enhance the visit and avoid the stairs if you would like). Inside the top of the memorial is a cabin like the one the Lincoln family would have lived in.
There is a visitor center with a 14 minute video. We were unable to see this because of school trips on the day and capacity limits with COVID-19. However, the memorial and beautiful, tranquil scenery was still definitely a high point of our trip.
Technical notes: I'd plan to spend 1-2 hours here, although you could enjoy it in less. It is roughly an hour south of Louisville. There are signs to the Boyhood home and Museum. Don't be confused, you want the Birthplace unless you have time for multiple. The Boyhood home is currently closed and the museum...might be nice...but doesn't look very nice from the outside. We didn't have time to see if that holds inside.

Very nice place to learn about Abraham Lincoln’s birth and early years in Kentucky. The short video was informative. The small museum area had on display a few pelts of local animals and a desk that Lincoln’s father built. The grounds were beautiful. The spring is still there, the farm was named Sinking Spring farm. To walk down the stairs to the spring is delightful on a hot summer day. The marble and granite memorial (built from 1909 to 1911) is impressive to see and walk into. The cabin which is not the actual Lincoln family home, but similar, is inside the memorial. Upon returning to the visitor center building to leave, we headed to the restrooms. The signs on the 2 restroom doors are very confusing, they say both are “family” restrooms, implying that one family unit should use one of them together and lock the door. This was not happening, doors were left unlocked and people were walking in on each other. These were built as a men’s restroom with stalls and urinals and a women’s restroom with stalls, and until major remodeling can be done, it should stay that way.

How long should I plan on being here?
Written 19 March 2017
Depends on how much time you have, how interested you are in learning about Lincoln and what the weather is like. One hour is good if you want to just see what's there. If you do the visitor center and film more like 2 hours. If you want to walk the grounds that's probably another hour because there are pathways through some woods and grasslands. Have fun!
