We did a 2/3 hour independent bus tour of the island from the cruise port. An enjoyable trip with beautiful sea and mountain views. The bus stopped at many places so we could take photos. We asked to be dropped off at the end of the tour at the local market which sold fresh fruit, clothes and trinkets for the tourists. The Samoan people are very friendly, and the prices for food and touristy things are fairly priced compared to other islands close by which were quite expensive.

We took a 3-hour tour of the island and I think we saw what there was to see: Flower Pot Rocks - two tiny islands in the harbor; the airport runway, a view of the golf course, Vila's Village. We rode in an old wooden bus that I don't believe had any shock absorbers.

This tour did not amount to much although a stop at the Marine Sanctuary (not what one would expect at a sanctuary - a series of brief films about marine conservation) was interesting. A drive around the coast was supposed to include 2 photo stops but on neither occasion did anyone feel moved to get off the coach to take photos. A stop at Avaio Beach allowed for refreshment but was otherwise not very interesting. The scheduled stop at Fagatogo Market did not occur. Altogether a disappointing tour although the tour guides were cheerful and informative regarding Samoan culture.

Rory West, the tour operator, is a living encyclopedia of history, geography, nature and many other subjects. His stories are captivating and during entire day there was no dull moment. Seems everyone knows or related to him in American Samoa; from officials, to Miss Pacific Island to people in the villages to our last encounter; the immigration officer at exit. Shouldn't be surprise once you have spent a day with Rory.
