Small harbor with a lot of bang...took a sail boat tour from here. Great location and easy to find. Access to lots of places to eat and shop.

For those of us staying in Kaanapali, amidst all the hotel chains and their exclusive rights, Lahaina Harbor seems to be one of the few options to see some local color. There are lots of eateries and souvenir shops here. Also, the famous Banyan park is here.

Parking can be tough to find. We went there twice, and on both occasions we parked in the public parking lot next to prison st.

All in all, Lahaina harbor is a typical American harbor with all the hustle and bustle, but a must visit in Maui.

We were brought here on a Norweigan Cruise tour to wait for the scheduled whale-watching trip. It pains me to give Lahaina (a beautiful place of which I have fond memories) such a low rating but this is an honest review. The burning question for me is how many homeless will the Lahaina dock hold as they yell stupid comments at the tourists, yell at each other, throw water on each other, and wash their clothes? A busload of tourists had no other place to go to wait for the boat tour.

The harbor area is still doing a lot of construction . Boat booths have been relocated to the loading dock. Construction trucks are parked on the library lawn park. Part of the ocean front library park walk way is blocked by trucks, building supplies and a tow truck with a cable to and boat stuck in the reef.
This area of land, piers and ocean are within the Lahaina historic district.
The restrooms are really messed up.
Such a beautiful sight is in constant construction .
Sundays are better because the harborfront school is closed and less construction .

Besides being known as the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom, the Lahaina Harbor was a destination for whaling fleets back in the day. A cannon near the pier is a reminder of the conflicts that existed between the sailors and the Christian missionaries in the 19th century. In contrast, today it serves as the place to begin snorkel, dive, whale watching, fishing, and sightseeing tours. The grounds of the rebuilt Lahaina Lighthouse are open to the public but not the lighthouse itself. From the harbor, you can walk to Front Street where you will find restaurants, bars, tourist and other shops. If you are into history (or not), you can download a map and brochure of its historic walking tour. Across from the harbor is the Old Court House, which has a visitor’s center and museum, and a portion of the Old Fort, once a jail for unruly sailors. Further down on Front Street is Banyan Tree Park, home to the largest Banyan Tree in the United States. Both places are a “must see/do” when your travels bring you to Maui.

The harbor offers many tours, such as the submersible visit to the reef or the sunset sail tours, and the ferry to Lanai... great opportunities to experience unique thrills...

There is the "Harbor" where the multitude of booths advertise tours and what-ever-your-heart-desires that can only be filled by booking a tour/excursion upon the gentle waters of the harbor.

And then there is the Harbor "Breakwall" beach where all the surfing beginners get their surf-legs or whatever it is called when newbies catch their first wave.

We found this strip of beach with 4-foot high water in which parents and responsible adults could hold a board for a youngster. It is also a favorite spot for older versions of "newbies" to give it a go (or get run-over in the doing).

During our time there, we enjoyed walking the gamut of Harbor tour charters lined up along the harbor front but we probably enjoyed more watching the beginners on Breakwall Beach (just to the left of the harbor proper).

Okay, be forewarned: the beach and the boards do bite back. While we sat and enjoyed the new-boarders, we also saw the aftermath of a young Irish man who got "bitten" good and hard in the head by the aerobatic dynamics of his flying surf board. EMT's to the rescue but ... no one gets a free ride. The magic word is "insurance" and therein lies the snag.

So, the waves are gentle an the pace is laid back but the opportunity for a trip to the hospital is still a very real possibility.

Back up to the Harbor for a safe ending to a non-surfing day.

Go to Lahaina harbor for a visit. Scenic views. Lots to see in the historic whaling port. Parking is available along Front Street. Park, then walk around.
