I had a fishing trip with 'Hinatea'. A terrible experience. Despite that they caught one marlin. There were 4 people fishing, and only 3 of them participated in that 1.5 hour fight with the fish. I was eliminated by deck hand. It seem that my age (I'm 59) looked inappropriate to him and he decided not allowing me to fish! Even I paid for that! Even the third guy asked for a change becoming tired, and capitan told him to give me a turn. He just said, you can sit and take a beer. For me that was completely disappointing. I saw that guy very self confident, he even tried to pull the 12-feet fish out of the water by his hands. Those who has even a little experience will definitely lough on that. Anyway, my fishing did not happen, it was like watching the 'wicked tuna' a little closer than on tv. I wish you never get into such 'adventure'.

THIS OUTFIT HAS BEEN REPORTED AS CLOSED. Please update your information. I tried to book a charter through this company because of all your glowing reviews only to get a continual no answer on the phone. So I called another charter group and they said this one was indeed closed and they had heard nothing on it’s reopening. Please do more research on fishing trips on Maui because they are few and far between. And the few are a bit sketchy. Thank you

My son, who is 12, and I went on all day trip with Killer and first mate Andy. Although we did not catch a fish after trolling for 8+ hours, I was able to spend quality time with my son without any electronics. While I was disappointed we did not get any bites, I have to mention that we were focused on catching a Marlin. My son has had a dream to catch a Marlin for a couple years now so that was what we focused on. The professionalism and effort that was put forth by the crew was nothing but exceptional. I clearly could tell that the Capt. wanted to get my son a Marlin and was doing everything he possibly could, including keeping us past the 8 hours we paid for. When I get the pleasure of heading back to Maui I will be fishing with Extreme Sport Fishing. .

Die Hard review Jan 2017 Maui

I read the reviews and listened to the brokers who said, "you'll never have an experience like this. " "Not appropriate for inexperienced anglers" and "As close as you'll get to a commercial fishing experience".

I left my wife at home (95 lbs and relatively inexperienced) because of the warnings regarding experience and level of exertion and strenuous activity expected.

Here's how it went: 2A we left the harbor, we ran for about 4 hours to a weather buoy. We trolled 2 lines with artificials around the buoy (the 'fish aggregation zone') for an hour or so. A 1-2 lb tuna was caught, but we had to leave the area to troll back to the harbor or we would be late on our return. So, this 1 good live bait got maybe 5 minutes of soak time, then we began chugging back to the harbor pulling a multitude of large plastic baits. They were changed out for different color plastics once during the return. No bites, no fish and seemingly no concern. "We did what we could and sometimes it's just that ... fishing, not catching".

Most disturbing, as we were finishing our "not catching" trip, we were told we needed to get back to the harbor quickly because they'd just had an afternoon add-on trip. So, we stripped down to 2 lines, pulled those at 20+ knots and were reassured that the fish we were targeting could catch up with these baits, so we were still actively fishing.

I've done my share of offshore fishing, on my own boat and on other charters around the world. And I realize that fish do not always cooperate and get hooked up. However (!), if I am actively hunting for fish, I'm doing everything possible to increase my likelihood of catching and not just fishing. That was not my experience on this day.

The captain and the mate were pleasant and said the right things, it was in the "doing" that I was disappointed.

A-MA-ZING day. Today my son-in-law and I went out today with Captian Rich and 1st Mate Andy. First, Andy was awesome very detailed and informative. While Captain Rich was busy getting us out Andy was setting up the rigs. Left at 530am and at 830 Captian Rich yelled "FISH ON and it a good one" It hit on my side so I was up, boy what a workout - soon I had landed a 150+lb Blue Marlin. Shortly after that we ran into some spotted whales and then the most awesome thing was coming upon a large dolphin pod feeding frenzy - dolphins everywhere jump like crazy. My son in law caught a rainbow runner which we kept for dinner. I cant say enough about EXTREME very professional people - and from what we heard on the pier very productive my marlin was the boats 50th of the year. Best fishing Charter around.

We travel all over and usually charter a boat because we are from the Texas Gulf Coast and love to fish.

This was by far and above the absolute worst private charter I have ever been involved with. You know what kind of day it is going to be and that you are probably in trouble when the deck hand climbs up in the bridge and goes to sleep.

Me and a friend did a private charter ($1500) because we read a lot of really good reviews, and the last time we were in Hawaii, we chartered a different boat and thought we would try this one. (The other one was 1000% better by the way).

Their website talks about using live bait, and if that is not working, they would try dead bait. Well they did neither. Not a speck of live or dead bait was on the boat. We only used artificial lures, and then in an 8 hour trip, they only changed them 1 time 1/2 way through the trip. I feel I was totally screwed...

Quote From their FAQ Page:

" The captains go bait fishing the night before the trip, so we usually have live bait on the boat. If we can't get live bait then we use dead bait."

Our Trip = No Live Bait, No Dead Bait

I tried to call and talk to the owner after I returned to the mainland as I wanted to cool down a little and not have an immediate heated reaction. He did call me back a few days later and acted like he was really concerned about my experience. He said he wanted to find out what happened and was going to talk to the captain and get back to me, he even acted like he wanted to try and do something to make it right. He said he was going to get back to me as soon as he had followed-up. Well, that was 2 weeks ago, and he hasn't returned my 2nd call to him, so I guess he really doesn't care after all.

I want everyone to know I do understand that it is called fishing, not catching, but I have never been on a charter that only used artificial, and only changed lures 1 time.... No chum, or nothing. I have never been skunked on a charter.... until now.

And although Captain Terry "Killer" Kellam was a nice guy, only thing he could say at the end was well... "I guess the fish won today". Of course they won, you can't win if you don't play, and we didn't play...

Deck hand Andy Payne was very knowledgeable about the fish species, etc. he just doesn't know how to catch them. And my advise to Andy remember that you can't catch fish if you go to the bridge and go to sleep. It is also a sign to your customers that you have given up...

I DO NOT recommend that you charter this boat. If you do, buyer beware.

My Husband and my two sons 18 and 21 took an eight hour private charter with Extreme and Captain Rich and Andy. The Trip was great Captain Rich and Andy are the experts, they know exactly what they are doing! Andy explained everything to us about the fish and safety things we should be aware of. No Bites in about the first four hours and then Captain Rich switched up a couple of lures and all of a sudden we had three Mahi Mahi on the lines, pretty exciting!!! The boys were thrilled as they reeled them in!! When we docked Captain Rich filleted the fish for us and we had several yummy meals eating them! Thanks again guys, we will recommend you to everyone we know!

Mahalo,
Kerri Black.

What a great day on the water! Captain Rich and Andy thoroughly enjoyed your family and were equally thrilled to watch your sons reel in those beautiful Mahi Mahi. Nothing makes us happier than to hear you had an awesome fresh dinner you caught for yourselves onboard the No Problem. Mahalo for taking the time to write such a nice review and for telling your friends about us.. Most of all, thank you for spending your day with us. We hope to see you on Maui again!

We went on a 8 hour shared charter and caught a fish in the first hour, sadly that was our only fish of the day but Captain Killer tried hard to find us more fish. The views were great and we saw a pod of dolphins playing in our wake which was awesome . Its called fishing and not catching for a reason but Captain Killer and Andy were great and we still went home with some Ono for dinner.

Mahalo for your review and for having joined us on the No Problem. We love your attitude! It is fishing not catching, and you are so right, Captain Killer and Andy always give 110% to find the fish. We are very glad you had a great time, enjoyed a dolphin show, and enjoyed your Ono for dinner.. We hope to see you again on your next trip to Maui!

I charted the boat for me and my son on July 5th. Cost $1450 plus tip (posted sign said standard 20% plus your fish in excess of what you can consume while in Maui). We got skunked. Not even a bite. This was the biggest waste of time and money. Didn't even get a follow-up thanks for emptying you pockets and paying for our gas. I wound not recommend it.

Aloha, we at Extreme Fishing Maui sincerely regret that you are disappointed with your fishing experience. Our captain does all he can to get you out to areas of known success and strive to reach our goal everyday to bring in the catch. Unfortunately it is the ocean and unpredictable day by day, all we can promise is that we strive to do our best. We are grateful for your business and hope you have received your letter of thanks which is typically sent out approximately ten days after your charter. Mahalo and best regards.
