Originally built as a getaway for the King it became a hospital for visiting seamen, particularly whalers in the mid to late 19th century. Nice building to walk round

There are more than a dozen historic buildings in downtown Lahaina and this is one of them. All things considered there are more interesting and educational places to visit, including the Courthouse, the Library, Baldwin Home, Banyan Tree, Pioneer Inn, etc.

Easily spotted on Front Street in the heart of Lahaina. It was originally commissioned by Kamehameha III back in 1833 to be used as an inn for visiting sailors and a merchant store. The King himself apparently also used this "inn" for extracurricular, hum, activities when visiting the area. In 1844 is was leased to the United States to serve as a hospital for ailing seamen and whalers until 1862. Currently the restored building is used by several businesses including a bakery & pie shop.

BOTTOM LINE: It's worth a few minutes of your time to see the unique architecture of this old building of its history. Clearly a piece of the Lahaina local history for nearly 190 years. Out front of the old hospital, is a huge old ship anchor and chain. MY RATING: 9/10
