About
The Baldwin Home was built in 1834 and served as the home of a practicing physician, Rev. Dwight Baldwin who is credited for saving the people of Maui, Molokai and Lanai from the scourge of smallpox during the terrible epidemic of 1853. The home itself, its household furniture, aged photographs, artifacts, displays and library present a fascinating picture of the life in Lahaina in the 19th century as lived by a missionary and medical doctor. Admission Fee of $7 allows entry to both Baldwin Home and Wo Hing Museums. Senior, Military, and Children discounts available. Candlelit Tours take place every Friday on the half-hour from dusk to 8:00pm. Purchase a "Passport to the Past" for $10 and get admission to four of Maui’s popular museums! (Baldwin Home, Wo Hing, A&B Sugar and Bailey House)

    Fascinating museum
Sweet little museum that shares what it was like to live in a missionary home in Hawaii. Docents were knowledgeable and helpful, adding interesting details pertaining to each room. We booked a self guided tour on line for $7 each, spent a little over an hour in the museum.

.Good spot for a brief taste of Lahaina history
Historical preservationists will enjoy this spot for a brief break from the bustle of Front Street. Local native islanders team with non-native local residents to educate, inform, and preserve the missionary history of Lahaina. The architecture and artifacts take you back two centuries to imagine the early days of Lahaina and its significance at the time.

    Very old Hawaiian house.
We went about six pm and were the only people on the tour. The tour is five dollars apiece and last about 20 minutes. The tour was led by an elderly Hawaiian woman who was very knowledgeable on Lahaina history and this very special house. Time well spent.

About a 6-room home from around the 1830's where missionaries to the Islands first lived. Saved and restored in the 1960's by Lahaina Restoration Foundation, which still operates it. Typically just one LRF person there who takes the very reasonable entrance fee ($5 pp for seniors) and then guides you for about 15 minutes around the house to point out the key artifacts and give you the history of the place and the people who lived there. Don't miss the women's shoes, the dentistry and surgical equipment (from the 1830's), the leather-faced doll, and some of the letters. Well worth the half-hour or so it takes to visit.

Not much to see in the Baldwin Home Museum, but the price is only $5, so I guess you get what you pay for.

The oldest house still standing on the island, Baldwin Home is a recognizable landmark in the heart of historic Lahaina. The original four-room, single level structure was built by Reverend Ephraim Spaulding between 1834-35 in what was then referred to as the “missionary compound.” This area offered a direct view to the Lahaina landing and roadstead beyond where whaling ships would anchor. Unfortunately, not open when we got to it, but worth a few minutes to look round the outside and read the information board.

I was under the impression (though my fault) this was a guided tour as advised to arrive 10 minutes beforehand. It isn’t I was given a leaflet with QR codes on. Despite that interesting home with plenty of displays and information inside.

This small insight into the life of an early missionary here was interesting, and I appreciated the short 'tour' by the docent. (I was the only visitor at the time.) I suppose you could take as much or little time as you like, depending on how deep you want to dive with the artifacts. I enjoyed the textiles - the embroidered bed cover - and the quilts on the children's beds. It was a hard life for sure. I also enjoyed the beautiful piano in the entry room, the letters, and the photos. If you are local or over 60 the entry price is $5, otherwise $7. I spent about 45 minutes here.

Amongst all the tourist shops and bars on the front street of Lahaina stands the oldest European house still standing on the island of Maui.
The original four-room structure was built by Reverend Ephraim Spaulding, but sickness caused him to return to Massachusetts after three years.
The house was taken over by missionary physician, dentist, and veterinarian, Rev Dwight Baldwin, who along with his family had been living in a grass hale (hut) nearby.
In 1849, he remodeled the house with 24-inch thick walls (constructed of coral, sand, and lava rock with rough-hewn timber framing), he also added a second floor, with high ceilings, to help keep the interior cool, with its new larger windows facing the prevailing winds from the ocean.
The house has a direct view of the Lahaina waterfront and anchorage beyond where whaling ships would anchor. In the past, they would take on drinking water from the spring behind the house.
This is the structure you see today, although the interior has been restored to an 1850s design & tours are offered.

TIP: Like most museums, it is closed on Monday. For information or a tour call (808) 661-3262.
I would appreciate a thumbs up below if you found this review informative.
Thank you.

Great little tour of the Baldwin House. Tour guide was very knowledgeable. You definitely don't need an hour, I think it took less than 15 minutes.

We worked with the Lahaina Restoration Society (lahainarestoration.org ) to catalog artifacts in the museum. It was a fantastic volunteer opportunity and I strongly recommend participating if you have an interest in the nuance of Hawaiian history.

We patiently waited for our turn to visit this historical structure and see how the family lived here over 100 years ago. Although the scenery may have changed the elegance of this home was outstanding. Dr. Baldwin was a preacher, doctor, dentist and veterinarian for the town all while his family kept growing.
