Located in Kihei on the south shore of Maui, the visitor center is an ideal spot to learn about the marine environment and even see humpback whales breaching. This scenic beachfront location at the foot of Haleakala has views of Kaho'olawe, Lana'i and West Maui looking across the waters of the sanctuary. Visitors to the new center inKihei will be able to learn about the efforts by NOAA, the State of Hawaii, and others to protect humpback whales, monk seals, sea turtles, and coral reefs.

When we visited, it was not humpback whale sighting season, so we were pleased to discover that the Center was still hosting lectures twice a week about the whales. Our lecturer was very knowledgeable, interesting, and kept a wide variety of people in her audience engaged for well over the announced time--we kept asking questions! I liked that when she... More

The volunteers really know about whales and Maui. We got some great advice on what to see and where to eat as well as being able to see 2 sea turtles on a barrier sea wall that native Hawaiians made centuries ago to give fish a safe place to go and be caught..

This is located in a 3 story building and the exhibit hall occupies the bottom floor. There is an observation deck for viewing. The volunteers are very passionate about the whales and other sealife. They have on display the skeletons of a monk seal and bottle nose dolphin. There are also bones and baleen from a humpback whale. There are... More

Although the building was closed, we were able to go into a meeting area where there is a lot to see. There are also objects and signs all over the property that really make it worthwhile to see.

We visited the center when the whales are not in Hawaii, but is was still very informative. The keeper was very knowledgeable, answered all of our questions and spent a lot of time with us.

The exhibits are very well done, the children's exhibits are very educational and well worth the visit. During whale season there is viewing from their deck..

As a teacher and lover of marine life, I have wanted to visit the sanctuary for quite some time and finally made it this year. Although it is a bit small, the docent was very knowledgeable and helpful. It was obvious that he truly enjoyed what he was doing. My whole family enjoyed looking around. I would visit if you... Go even if it's not whale season. Great people, lots to learn, take kids. Great plush turtles, whales, and monk seals for kids at super reasonable prices.
