Ching's pond is always a great place to swim unless it's been raining a lot. It can then be very dangerous. However, most of the time, it's a beautiful place to relax and swim in paradise. For those brave enough...and I would not suggest it to the timid or inexperienced, but there are places to jump in from near the bridge. BE CAREFUL. The margin of error is slim. There is a hole about 20 feet deep just in the right place,, but miss it, and you'll go in where it's only five feet. Swim it first to inspect what's down there and where the hole is. Visibility can be phenomenal. Also, many don't know of the smaller pool just uphill of the bridge hidden in the jungle. There is a path to it, but most just go to the larger pool. This pool is located just past the YMCA on the way to Hana.

Usually you can find locals jumping into this pond from the top of the bridge. There is only a narrow area jumping into this “pond”, so do not jump if you are not a local. It’s not worth the risk of becoming paralyzed. I am not sure if there is any other place to jump in from that is not so high up. It was raining when we visited, so we just missed the locals jumping.

Ching’s Pond... locals sitting up top with sign saying locals only. Stayed in a cabin at Wainnapa State Park. We wondered why no one was at the black sand beach. When we left for the day, there was protesters blocking one lane at the end of the road. One was holding a sign saying it was a private road even though it is a road to the state park. The road to Hana is a beautiful place but not sure people will keep visiting if they feel unwelcome. Hope they aren’t counting on the tourist revenue. We visited 16 years ago and the feel is much different now. It’s sad because I know it’s probably just a few people and most of the people we encounter in Maui are wonderful.

As beautiful as this place is, No Parking signs now prohibit you from staying, and after many years the No Trespassing signage is now being enforced. Don't waste your time coming here.

One of many swimming holes but this one stood out to me enough to do a review for some reason. It was not crowded when I went which was great.

Local spot, for sure, but everyone was very friendly. You can do cliff jumps from here, but it's pretty dangerous. Some local kids were trying to get me to jump with them. I did 50 ft cliff jumps in Greece, but I didn't do them here because the safe landing area is relatively small. Also, the pinned location for this POI on the TripAdvisor map is incorrect, as of today. Look it up on Google maps for accuracy.

It is a beautiful pool between mile Marker 16 and 17 on the Hana highway. Crystal clear and clean. So refreshing. We swam there for about an hour before an old Lady (I refuse to say native Hawaiian because ANYONE born in Hawaii is a native) appeared at the top and started blowing a whistle and demanding we leave. We were done anyway so left (at our own pace). There are signs saying “no swimming” but I was warned this is just selfish locals that want to keep it to themselves. Indeed as we left some locals started using g it for themselves. There is no legal right to prevent tourists swimming there. It’s public land. I hate that attitude. I’m sure they love the money the tourists spend and probably few wound have jobs outside the tourist industry. Hypocrites and selfishness.

Anyway, don’t let their attitude put you off. You have as much right to be there as they do. They don’t own it. So enjoy!

We stopped here on the way to Hana. It was certainly pretty but it was very hot near the pond (the breeze doesn’t get down there) and it was pretty crowded. If you like things off the beaten path, I would choose another stop.

We walked down the hill to enjoy this beautiful spot along the drive to Hana. This is one of the spots worth visiting along the way. The path down can be a little slick when wet, but it is a relatively short path.
