In the spirit of full disclosure, our family has 3 adult children and not teenagers! But that was the closest choice given by Trip Advisor. My review wouldn’t change anyway.
Cruising down the side of a volcano with a minimum of pedal pushing is a perfect activity for a low effort, outdoor way to see the Maui countryside. There are many bike companies offering this in Haleakala Volcano Park, but we chose Bike Maui based on other reviews. You meet in the parking lot next to Haiku market and after helmet issue, you enjoy a 45 minute mini-coach ride to your “launching point”, about 6500 feet above sea level. Shout out to our driver/ guide Kimo who entertained and educated us driving up the volcano. Frequent stops to taste fresh fruit, wild fennel seeds, and to survey wild avocado trees plump with fruit earned him a “merit badge”!
The ride itself involves a couple of hours of no effort coasting down a hill. You only have to brake, steer, and keep your eyes on the road! You will pass through fields with horses and cows, pass clumps of native bougainvillea and hibiscus, and ignore the cars and trucks passing you with great respect for your space.
Ride Maui’s bikes were excellent. Well maintained with state of the art hydraulic brakes and comfortable seats. No complaints here and we’re glad to say we’re very happy with their ride.
