Muddy, slippery, challenging but worth every step for the views.

The hikes in Kokee State Park are not for the faint of heart. Due to the high rainfall levels on the island, the mountain trails are always wet. The red mud is VERY slippery - and the red colour DOES NOT come out! However, your efforts and energy required to walk on any of the trials is rewarded with spectacular... More

The trail can be muddy and slippery but it is all worth it! Good hiking shoes is a must and strong legs.

There are two ways to get to this trail head depending on whether or not you have a 4x4 vehicle. If you don't, then you need to start at the rear of the parking lot at the Puuhinahina lookout and spend an extra 20 minutes hiking down into the canyon to reach the start of the trail. If you do... My family and I did this hike on Jan 1. It was moderately strenuous (mostly on the way back when it was mostly uphill.) There were only a couple of minor slippery spots for us but I'd definitely recommend good shoes. I had on Keens which were great since you do need to cross a stream. There are amazing views... More

We visited Kauai in Sept 16 and stumbled across the Canyon Walk. This is not a walk for the elderly. Allow a couple of hours to do the walk and MAKE SURE you go right out the end and you will be rewarded with fantastic views. There are a few side tracks that you can take along the way. If... More

Takes about 2 1/2 hours, depending on your pace. Great views and a great work out. Moderately strenuous.

This is a moderately strenuous hike that doesn't require any special gear. There were some slick parts, so we found hiking shoes with good grip to be beneficial. Most of the hike is through the cover of trees, until you come out on top of a ridge where you will find a magnificent view of the canyon. You can keep... More

The Waimea Canyon itself is truly a great site even if all you do is drive to the different lookout points, but you'd be doing yourself a great disservice if you don't take some extra time to get off the beaten path and explore! The best way to do that, of course, is to go hike one of the trails.... More

Even if I'm in poor shape right now I managed to complete it so it can't be that hard, but still, do not underestimate it since the way back is quite a steep and slippery climb. That said, this 2-3 hour hike (2-way) will give you the best views of the canyon by far, I mean you'll be right on... More

This is a strenuous hike with all the up and downhill going, slippery mud and dodging rocks and roots. But it's definitely worth it. You'll enjoy the hike more if you're wearing good hiking boots, have plenty of water and hiking poles (much better than the sticks some hikers were using). Views from the cliffs are amazing into this deep... More
